Even the eighth grade exam returns completely to its origins, after a series of variations on the theme caused by the pandemic in the last three years. Compared to twelve months ago, in fact, the exam sees the reinsertion of the written English, suspended in the last editions to favor students.

And precisely in view of the umpteenth change, there is no shortage of doubts on the part of the protagonists: how will the tests take place? What are the admission requirements? How is the final grade calculated? To shed light on all this is the Skuola.net website, which outlined the salient features of the 2023 State Eighth Grade exam.

Three written tests and an oral interview: the written test of Foreign
languages is back
The structure of the eighth grade exam, we recall, responds to Ministerial Decree No. 741/2017 (relating to Legislative Decree No. 62 of 2017), which establishes the composition of the State exam for the first cycle of education: three written tests accompanied by an oral interview. In detail, the first obstacle that students will have to face is the writing of Italian. This is a test that will be based on three types of track - among which candidates will have to select one to be developed - prepared by the teachers in charge of the Italian language teaching: descriptive text, argumentative text and comprehension of the text.

Following, the second written test, the one that tests the logical-mathematical skills of the candidate. Which is - reads the ministerial note of last February - "intended to ascertain the ability to rework and organize the knowledge, skills and competences acquired by the candidates". This will also be prepared on the basis of the indications of the mathematics teachers inside the school and consists of two types: problems articulated on one or more requests and multiple choice questions.

Finally, as far as writings are concerned, the great return: the foreign language test. Divided into two distinct sections - one for English and the other for the second EU language (different from school to school) - the test measures "the comprehension and written production skills attributable to the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the Council of Europe". The traces of the foreign language writing can be linked to different types of tasks: comprehension of the text; elaboration of a dialogue; transformation of a text; personal letter or email and summary of a text.

The last step of the Terza Media exam is, as always, the oral interview. At this stage, the subcommittee - meeting in collegiate - questions the candidate in order to evaluate "the level of acquisition of knowledge, skills and competences described in the final profile of the student provided for by the National Guidelines for the curriculum". All paying particular attention to the student's ability to expose and argue, even with a critical spirit, the different links between the individual disciplines. In this phase, graduates will also be questioned about the skills acquired in the field of Civic Education. Moreover, although the legislation does not expressly provide for the realization of a thesis as a starting point of the interview, from what students report and search online, the custom of requesting the production of a paper of that kind still seems to be quite widespread.

Exam admission
requirements
But before you can take the actual exam, you must be admitted to the final phase. As stated in Legislative Decree No. 62 of 2017, access to the State exam necessarily passes through the decisions of the Class Council, taken during the final ballot. To reassure the children there is, however, the indication to admit "in general, even in the case of partial or non-acquisition of learning levels in one or more disciplines". As long as certain criteria are met. First of all, the student must have attended at least three quarters of the annual number of hours provided and not have run into the sanction of non-admission to the State exam. A fundamental requirement is then the participation - not necessarily their passing - to the INVALSI tests, within the month of April.

Eighth grade, partial grade and final grade: how does it work?
After deliberating on admissions, the Class Council also decides on the admission mark, with which the candidates will present themselves to the State exam. During the final ballot, the Council assigns to each student a vote (expressed in tenths) on the three-year course carried out. The admission mark will then average with the vote resulting from the three exam tests, and from here the final grade will be obtained: it should be emphasized that the exam is considered passed only against a mark equal to or greater than six tenths. The Commission may reserve the right to award unanimous praise to candidates who have reached a mark of ten-tenths.

The level of
skills acquired by the student at the end of middle school, will then be included in the final certification of skills, which also includes those of "citizenship" progressively acquired. A document, this, that is drawn up during the final ballot and that wants to help students also to orient for high school. And that, at the end of the exam, will be delivered both to the student's family and, in copy, to the school or training institution chosen for the next cycle.
