In the USA, a tiny house is sold on the water – for a hefty price. The houseboat became famous through a Netflix series.
Munich/Seattle – Living on a few square meters and yet everything you need: So-called tiny houses are very much in vogue, but can also cause major problems after purchase. Most of these are free-standing mini-houses that leave nothing to be desired, from bathrooms to fully equipped kitchens. In some cases, the tiny dwelling can even be transported.
The dream of a tiny house attracts not only with a minimalist way of life and independence, but also with a supposedly low purchase price. For a 46-square-meter mini-house on the water, however, almost half a million euros are now due.
USA: Tiny house on the water for sale for almost half a million euros
It is true that a tiny house is usually cheaper than a large single-family house in the overall package. According to the real estate portal Wohnglück, they are more expensive per square metre. According to the German Tiny House Association, 35,000 to 120,000 euros are due, depending on the living space and equipment.
Now, a tiny house in the U.S. stands out in particular. As Business Insider reported, it is a houseboat on Lake Union in Seattle, Washington. The modern Scandinavian-style apartment is for sale for 545,000 US dollars (the equivalent of 499,160 euros).
Tiny house from Netflix series for sale: Originally intended as a holiday home
Maybe one or the other even knows the houseboat. As part of the Netflix series "Stay here", the boat was extensively renovated in 2018. The house was promptly given a new coat of paint – including a new, modern interior. In addition to a fully equipped kitchen, there is a bedroom, a small bathroom and a terrace upstairs.
After the houseboat was renovated by interior designer Genevieve Gorder and real estate agent Peter Lorime, it was to be converted into holiday accommodation. The broker charges the equivalent of about 250 euros per night so that the owners can cover their loan from the bank.
Half a million euros: Tiny house from Netflix series is sold after renovation
However, the houseboat is no longer available as a holiday home. The tiny house on the water is being sold, as an advertisement on the real estate portal Realogics Sotheby's International Reality reveals – and for a proud price of half a million euros. With 46 square meters of living space, that's almost 11,000 euros per square meter.

Meanwhile, prices on the real estate market in southern Germany are falling. According to this, the costs in the city of Munich amount to 8578 euros per square meter.
In Germany, the tiny house trend is not yet as widespread as in the USA, for example. According to the Tiny House Association, more than 500 mini-houses are built in this country every year. In addition, there are now over 100 providers. You can even find entire Tiny House settlements, for example in Mehlmeisel (Bavaria) and Hollenbek (Schleswig-Holstein). Others are still being planned.
