Campiello, Edith Bruck receives the 2023 Special Lifetime Achievement Award

Edith Bruck has been awarded the Special Campiello Lifetime Achievement Award 2023. The award, decided by the Il Campiello Foundation and announced by the president of the Jury of Writers Walter Veltroni, will be delivered by the exclusive partner Danieli, to the writer, poet, translator, witness of the Shoah, on the final evening of the 61st edition of the Campiello Prize, on September 16th at the Gran Teatro La Fenice in Venice.
"Edith Bruck receives the Campiello Lifetime Achievement Award for her exemplary biographical and artistic parable, which makes her an exceptional witness of the European and Italian twentieth century and a courageous relay of its values in the present century.
Having survived the Holocaust after her imprisonment in various Nazi concentration camps, Bruck dedicated her life and writing to keeping alive the memory and reflection on the darkest page of recent human history, the planned persecution of the Jews", explains the motivation for the Prize. "Bruck has crossed the borders between peoples and languages of a Europe first torn apart and then reunited: through her work as a translator she has brought together words and verses of distant languages, and through her work as a writer in a language, Italian, not received from birth but adopted in adulthood, has shown how those boundaries can be blurred.
Even the boundaries between the written word theater and cinema have been continually crossed by a voice that has always been able to speak with delicacy and clarity. An example of a passionate resistance to the horror of dictatorships and the struggle for the defense of rights, Edith Bruck embodies a model of civil and intellectual commitment and a profile of great humanity.
