The Tunisian government, according to EP sources, has denied entry to the country to a delegation of MEPs from the Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee.
The delegation was due to arrive today, was led by MEPs Michael Gahler, Dietmar Koster, Salima Jenbou, Mounir Satouri, Emmanuel Maurel, and was due to meet members of civil society, trade unions, and members of the political opposition to President Kais Saied. In a letter signed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad, Tunis informed the delegation that it had denied him permission to enter.
The mission of the delegation - which is part of those that the AFET commission carries out abroad cyclically - had the objective of "understanding the current political situation in the country, supporting an inclusive national dialogue, and evaluating the memorandum of understanding signed by the EU and Tunisia". As usual, it was made up of members of several groups, in this case from the EPP, S&D, Renew, Greens, Left. The mission was supposed to last two days.
