Caring for a lawn in autumn in five steps

Even though it is a tedious task for many gardeners, you should take care of your lawn again in autumn.

To ensure that the lawn does not have brown or even bald spots after the winter with a lot of snow, frost and moisture, you should take precautions in autumn and make the lawn winter-proof. You should keep the following five tips in mind.

If you have a garden, you usually also own a lawn – unless the choice falls on a controversial rock or gravel garden. In autumn, you should work through the following points so that the green area survives the winter:

• Mow the lawn again: If the temperatures drop permanently below 9 degrees Celsius, you should mow the green area again. But make sure that you don't leave it too long or too short. Because if you mow briefly, frost has an easy time and can damage the roots. If the lawn remains too long, it can bend again in frost, as Kiepenkerl knows.
• According to Norddeutscher Rundfunk, you should scarify the lawn again in September to remove any lawn felt.
• You should not fertilize lawns too late, but the greenery will benefit from an autumn fertilizer with a high potassium content until the beginning of November. Then you should also water thoroughly again.
• Removing foliage: Foliage that overwinters on the lawn can cause rotten spots and damage the lawn. So make sure that the area is processed again with the rake and leaves are removed. You should keep your hands off loud leaf blowers.
• Reseeding? Bald spots can be repaired in September with the help of reseeding, as the grass will grow back in time at these temperatures.

After the winter, you should apply some fertilizer to the lawn again so that it becomes nice and green again.
