Highlights: Severely disabled people can apply for a severely disabled person's pass in Germany. This brings with it some advantages, rights and disadvantage compensation. Depending on the severity of the cardiovascular disease, a degree of disability between 10 and 100 can be certified. Some surgical interventions on the heart can cause the GdB to increase or not be lower than a certain value. After a heart transplant, a GdB of 100 applies for up to two years, after which it must be re-evaluated.

Cardiovascular diseases plague many people. Depending on the clinical picture, the degree of disability is determined. But there are other factors.

Frankfurt – Cardiovascular diseases are killing more and more people worldwide. If people are affected by their disease, they can receive a degree of disability and thus benefits.

Degree of disability in cardiovascular diseases

Severely disabled people can apply for a severely disabled person's pass in Germany. This brings with it some advantages, rights and disadvantage compensation. In the field of cardiovascular diseases, the degree of disability (GdB) depends on the extent of the impairment of performance as well as the pain or the formation of edema. The degree of disability is determined individually for each person, the type of heart or circulatory disease is not decisive.

The degree of disability is issued by the Pension Office or the Office of Social Affairs. This is initially based on the clinical picture and the functional limitations in everyday life. The clinical picture is then supplemented by ergometer data and other parameters. If there are no significant performance restrictions even under the usual heavier load, a maximum GdB of 10 is certified. A GdB between 20 and 40 can be obtained if performance impairment already exists under moderate load.

Higher degree of disability due to arrhythmias

Anyone who experiences performance impairments in everyday work can be certified as having a degree of disability of over 50 and is therefore considered severely disabled. In the case of performance impairments even at rest, even a GdB of 90 to 100 is possible. Some surgical interventions on the heart can cause the GdB to increase or not be lower than a certain value. In the case of heart valve prostheses, for example, the GdB cannot be less than 30. After a heart transplant, a GdB of 100 applies for up to two years, after which it must be re-evaluated.

Indicative values for coronary heart disease:

  • GdB 0-10: No significant impairments in performance even under the usual heavier load
  • GdB 20-40: Performance impairments under moderate load
  • GdB: 50-70: Impairment of performance even with everyday light load
  • GdB 80: Restriction of cardiac output with occasional, temporarily severe decompensation symptoms
  • GdB 90-100: Performance impairment already at rest

Due to seizure arrhythmias of the heart, the degree of disability can range from 10 to 30. This is determined according to frequency, duration and subjective impairment. Depending on the GdB, assistance and compensation for disadvantages for people with disabilities are determined. These range from discounts on public transport, transport services for severely disabled people to education and housing allowances.
