If you want to buy a saver ticket for IC or ICE in the future, you must leave certain contact details. Whether online or in travel centers.
Cologne – While bus and train prices continue to rise in local transport, a new hurdle is being added to the purchase of some long-distance tickets from Deutsche Bahn. In the future, IC and ICE tickets with saver fare or super saver fare can only be purchased by providing a mobile phone number or an e-mail address. This also applies to purchases in travel centers and agencies.

The mandatory provision of contact details for the purchase of saver tickets will apply from 1 October 2023. For the time being, the change will not affect any other tickets. "We continue to switch to online tickets because we want to better inform customers about their itinerary," said a DB spokesman for the German Press Agency. For some time now, Deutsche Bahn has been increasingly relying on informing travelers about their itinerary by SMS or e-mail. As a result, they should no longer be surprised at the last second if something goes wrong with the booked trip. But for this you need the contact details of the people in connection with their current travel plans. Due to frequent delay problems, this service is very important for many passengers. In 2022, for example, an average of only 65.6 percent of long-distance trains were on time.
Otherwise, nothing should change for the time being with the saver tickets of the railway. These can still be printed, but in the future they will only look slightly different from previous cheap tickets for IC and ICE. If you buy a supersaver ticket for another person, you can alternatively provide their contact details. There has also recently been a major change in the Deutschlandticket, which trains can be used in the event of delays.

Where you can still get supersaver tickets of the railway without giving contact details
However, there is still a single exception to the contact details rule for saver tickets after October 1, 2023. If you buy tickets from the vending machine, you can still buy the cheap tickets without giving your mobile phone number or e-mail. However, only a very small proportion of saver tickets are sold in this way.

Nothing will change for all rail passengers who book the saver tickets on the DB website or via the smartphone app. This is because when purchasing online, the contact details are already stored in the corresponding customer account. According to Deutsche Bahn, around 80 percent of saver tickets are purchased digitally.
