On the fruit, in the garbage or on the window: In midsummer, the pests in the apartment can be annoying. How to quickly get rid of them, read here.

Flies are just annoying for many - after all, their buzzing is especially annoying when falling asleep. In addition, it looks very unappetizing when many of these pests sit on the garbage or even on fresh fruit in the kitchen.

Laurel oil, chili or matches: these home remedies scare away flies

After all, every child knows that flies can be carriers of, for example, (faecal) bacteria, which they pass on during their stopovers. So if you want to keep them away from food and the like, you should heed the following tips or home remedies that will help you drive away the insects without much effort.

Essential oils

Flies do not like essential oils, which is why they are easily deterred by the smell and run away. Laurel oil in particular has an effect here. Therefore, put a few drops of the oil in an aroma lamp with a little water. This then exudes the scent in the respective room. Alternatively, you can also fill the mixture into a spray bottle and apply it to the trash can, fruit bowl and the like.

The situation is similar with cloves. Again, get the oil here and put it in an aroma lamp. If you don't have one, you can simply cut a lemon in half, drape the cloves on it and put the decoration in the window.

The scent of eucalyptus oil is also too penetrating for the flies, which is why they can use it instead of laurel or clove oil.

Hot spices

Chili or cayenne pepper also have a deterrent effect on the pests. Simply put the powder in a bowl of warm water and dissolve it. Then they put it in the window or other "gathering places". By the way, you can also transfer the mixture to a spray bottle and spray it on particularly delicate areas.

Tomato patch

For most of us they smell like holidays on the Mediterranean, for flies they are just foul-smelling: tomato plants. If you plant your terrace or balcony with it, you have, so to speak, a kind of natural shield against the annoying insects. On top of that, you always have fresh tomatoes for a delicious summer salad in the house.

Matches against larvae

However, if you cavort in and around the houseplants, you should try this unusual trick: Take matches and stick them upside down in the potting soil. The reason for this is that the so-called mourning fly is only too happy to lay its eggs in the potting soil and the larvae then feed on the plant roots. If you stick the match head into the ground and then pour water on it, it releases sulfur, which kills the larvae.

Also exciting: An eternal topic of contention: This is how often you should really change your bed linen in summer.

Flypaper

Otherwise, you also have the option of simply laying out fly paper. You can buy this in the drugstore or you can simply do it yourself. Instructions can be found on Brigitte.de: To do this, pour 750 milliliters of sunflower oil into a saucepan. Then add a few spoons of honey and a little resin. Warm the mixture until the resin becomes liquid. Then cut baking paper into strips and dip it into the sticky mass. When it has cooled down and is dry, you can lay out the homemade fly paper.

With these tips you can prevent flies in your own four walls:

In general, you should pay attention to a few things to ensure that the annoying killers do not disturb you in the first place:

  • After eating, immediately wipe the table and dishes and remove food debris.
  • Cover the fruit bowl or place fruit in the refrigerator.
  • Empty the trash can twice a week and keep the lid closed.
  • Always close windows and doors and/or have insect screens installed.
