Hiking in Old Yodfat National Park, April 22, 2022/RTG

On these long, hot summer days, which officially ended on September 21, it takes a measure of optimism and imagination to "smell" the approaching autumn, and we have already learned that before October there really is no autumn in Israel.

The guides of the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel recommend a trip to the Yodfat ridge - an area where you can feel on the one hand a bit of Europe and on the other hand the most Israeli mosaic there is, with mountain views and wonderful views, easy hiking trails especially suitable for sunset, a variety of localities that are different from the other, many culinary options every day of the week, wonderful places for olive oil lovers and lovers of quality chocolate and a concentration of thousands of beautiful gravels, Which suggests that autumn is here. Please note that most of the beautiful open places on the Yodfat ridge are not shaded, so it is recommended to walk in the morning or afternoon.

About the place

Ancient Yodfat contains a fascinating historical story about the days of the Great Revolt against the Romans, Josephus who would later become Josephus Flavius - was the commander of the Great Revolt against the Romans. In preparation for the revolt, Joseph fortified 19 cities in the Galilee, and Yodfat was one of them. In the story of Yodfat's fall, Joseph was also taken prisoner by the Romans, and since then, he has sat down and written to us about the period. This is the main remnant of the written material that tells us what exactly happened there.

On our tour of the mountain we can see the wall, the burnt olive press, the water reservoirs and other buildings that were used by the villagers. In addition, in order to better illustrate the story, figures of Roman soldiers of the time were placed on the mountain and even the battering ram - a Roman weapon of war that broke through the wall. Beyond the historical story, the mound is also filled with gravel blossoms, which can be seen at the edge of the mountain and down towards Nahal Yodfat (blue marking). The combination of gorgeous blooms and a fascinating historical story, as well as route options suitable for all ages, have made ancient Yodfat a desirable and suitable travel center for everyone.

Road story

The route begins at a dirt parking lot reached by turning right, 50 meters before the gate of Yodfat. After parking, you go up towards the mound and you have options for the route - you can turn left (east) at the black marking and circle the mountain, and you can climb up the blue path and reach the top directly. If we decide to choose black, eventually they will connect. For hikers, who want to get a spectacular view from one of the most beautiful peaks in the Lower Galilee, you can continue with the blue marking into Nahal Yifat and the Mediterranean grove and together with the trail pass through the forest (note the descent to the orchids) until you reach a jeep road after which the climb to the top of the mountain and observation point begins. The descent from the mountain is still marked in blue which becomes a jeep trail and finally connects to the red trail that returns to the parking.
