Diane Keaton is truly one of the pioneering actresses of female empowerment

Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu

Madame Figaro. - What inspires you the character of J.C. Wiatt played by Diane Keaton in Baby Boom?
Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu. - Diane Keaton is really one of the pioneering actresses of female empowerment. Already in Manhattan, in 1979, she embodied this independent, go-getter woman, whose masculine look (men's vest, tweed pants, tie) did not detract from her delicious fantasy. In Baby Boom (1987), she plays with great humor a yuppie from New York who finds herself with a baby on her arms following the death of a distant cousin. A role that reminds me of mine in Three Men and a Basket (1985), a film that also told the story of the difficulty of being a mother and pursuing a career at the same time.

In what outfit do you feel powerful?
My number one question: what clothes will I feel good in today? Which can vary depending on the day... A shirt and jeans or a dress and boots, it doesn't matter, the main thing is that I'm aligned with myself. Besides, I do not follow trends at all, I prefer to wear a beautiful comfortable garment than a fashionable piece.

Are you a careerist?
No, but ambitious yes, both professionally and personally. Let's say instead that I have the ambition to succeed in my life. This is one of the reasons why I did not have a regular career. There were pains that I had to deal with by staying out of my job and happiness that I wanted to live fully, such as motherhood with my daughter. It's all about balance.

Élodie Bouchez as Nicole Kidman in Prêt à tout

Elodie Bouchez as Nicole Kidman. Hairdressing Vasco Freitas. Fred Marin makeup. Thierry Lebraly

What I like about the character of Nicole Kidman is that her charm and fantasy take precedence over her ferocity.

Élodie Bouchez

Madame Figaro. - What inspires you the character of Suzanne Stone played by Nicole Kidman in Ready for anything?
Élodie Bouchez. - Careerist women do not fit my world and the world of television in which Suzanne Stone absolutely wants to break through is foreign to me. I don't like representations of power, because I immediately think of abuses related to power. It's not a concept I find appealing. But what I like about the character of Nicole Kidman, very well written by Gus Van Sant, is that her charm and fantasy take over her ferocity. I also like the fact that she plays on her seduction, all leg in her colorful miniskirt suits, while careerist women often erase their femininity by dressing in men's suits.

In what outfit do you feel powerful?
My idea of the powerful silhouette is a fairly structured look, a jacket with marked shoulders, from Saint Laurent for example, with pants and a tank top. But more often than not, when I audition for a film and I want to convince, I dress in the idea I have of the character.

Are you a careerist?
Frankly, if I had been, I would have had another career. Instead, I joined the Go with the flow. I never chose my roles with a strategy. But the career of an actor is not linear, it is made of acceleration, slowdown, rise in power, descent ... Our job is roller coasters.

Camellia Jordana as Julia Roberts in Erin Brockovich

Erin Brockovich is a superheroine, a precursor of our time

Camélia Jordana

Madame Figaro. - What inspires you the character of Erin Brockovich played by Julia Roberts in Erin Brockovich, alone against all?
Camellia Jordana. - I think it's beautiful. And I can only admire his journey. That of a young single and self-taught mother, who managed to become a lawyer, businesswoman and environmental activist in the 1980s. She is a superheroine, a precursor of our time. I also love her freedom to be, she totally assumes who she is. She doesn't need to slip into men's suits. In leather miniskirt, tight bustier or leopard print, she knocks down mountains. She's feminine and sexy to the hilt, and she doesn't care if she likes it or not.

In what outfit do you feel powerful?
If I need to seduce on a professional level, I will either express my artistic side through my outfit, or dress according to how I want to be perceived. I like the idea of assuming both my Africanness and my femininity. My power outfit is tweed cigarette skirt, fitted top, Fendi suit jacket. And always with biker boots, just so that the message is clear! (Laughter.

)

Are you a careerist?
I am ambitious in the very definition of ambition: to have a burning desire to achieve something. In France, it is a word that has a pejorative connotation. But I am not a careerist, because there is in this notion, the idea of "at all costs". I'm looking to chart a path called a career, but in my own way, with hard work.

Laetitia Dosch as Melanie Griffith in Working Girl

Laetitia Dosch as Melanie Griffith. Hairdressing Vasco Freitas. Fred Marin makeup. Thierry Lebraly

She wants to achieve success without losing her soul

Lætitia Dosch

Madame Figaro. - What do you think about Melanie Griffith's character Tess McGill in Working Girl?
Laetitia Dosch. - A terrible blow-dry, shoulders wider than those of Magic Johnson, endless heels... (Laughter.) More seriously, I love her usurping side, a little vulgar, different and helpless in the face of the environment in which she would like to evolve. She wants to achieve success without losing her soul, her personality, her fantasy, her humor, without making too many concessions. She is nice, but she also embodies a kind of American dream a bit naive and outdated.

In what outfit do you feel powerful?
In life, I prefer to claim my artistic side and I favor creative, colorful pieces. I also feel good in high-waisted, long and flared pants, heeled ankle boots, open shirts or T-shirts with fun messages. I like the idea of being a little sassy.

Are you a careerist?
I would rather say that I have ambition, and more than anything, that I am a workaholic. On the other hand, I have no tactics or career strategy. Moreover, I started late: I left the Manufacture (Haute école des arts de la scène, in Lausanne, editor's note) at 28 and only started in cinema at 33. And then I had to fight to get out of roles (the crazy on duty, the girl in bed...) in which I had been locked up. But I have ideas and above all convictions, which allow me to move mountains.

It is magnificent in its contradictions

India Hair

Madame Figaro. -What inspires you the character of Shiv Roy played by Sarah Snook in the series Succession?
India Hair. - I like its ambitiousness as much as its underlying flaws. She is magnificent in her contradictions, both faithful to her siblings but also capable of betrayal to save her skin. It is ultimately as complex as any of us can be. But, personally, I prefer women of power on screen. In life, I am rather the type to shun everything that represents forms of issues. Power even causes me a repellent effect.

In what outfit do you feel powerful?
It's a real topic for me. I was not raised in a family environment where clothing was synonymous with power: my parents were sculptors and they were rather covered with earth! I'm learning, but I don't like to feel disguised, I rather want to wear what looks like me. I particularly like the Patou brand for its classic and modern lines and incredible materials. To feel convincing, I lean towards high-waisted pants, structured, wool or tweed, and sweaters close to the body. A bit like Shiv, by the way...

Are you a careerist?
Careerist? I have the impression that this term is negative as if being can only be done to the detriment of others. What I am sure of is that I can give everything to be part of projects with people who are important to me.

Marina Hands as Jennifer Aniston on The Morning Show

Marina Hands as Jennifer Aniston. Hairdressing Alex Lagardère. Makeup Vera Dierckx. Thierry Lebraly

Her inner conflicts are captivating

Marina Hands

Madame Figaro. - What inspires you the character of Alex Levy played by Jennifer Aniston in the series The Morning Show?
Marina Hands. - There are several things I love about her character. First, the idea of this journalist, very solitary, who gets up every day at 3 a.m. and whose daily life is entirely regulated by her work fascinates me. It's the kind of life you don't show very often in a female character. Her inner conflicts, between the love she feels for a man she works with and the guilt she buries at his actions, are equally captivating. I admire these women in high positions that millions of people watch every day on TV. I can imagine the pressure and responsibility they bear.

In what outfit do you feel powerful?
I often wear a jacket, a shirt, pants, in short, a masculine panoply, which will reassure me about my ability to convince and feel listened to. My reflex? Being chic, but not feminine, for fear of not being taken seriously. It's unfortunate, but my generation was raised in the idea that femininity could be a distraction.

Are you a careerist?
No, because I have no career strategy, I am not happy in ambitious solitary, only meetings count. Besides, I never ran behind the zeitgeist, which probably allowed me to meet filmmakers who really wanted to work with me.

Léa Drucker as Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada

Léa Drucker as Meryl Streep. Ferragamo coat. Tie Toyama hairstyle. Makeup Lauriane Rousse. Thierry Lebraly

A tough, unsympathetic woman, but with incredible boldness and panache

Léa Drucker

Madame Figaro. -What inspires you the character of Miranda Priestly played by Meryl Streep dans The Devil Wears Prada?
Léa Drucker. - She represents a tough, unsympathetic woman, but with incredible audacity and panache. What touches me is that she still manages to distil humor, even a touch of humanity and fragility in her character. I must admit that these scathing women of power are rather foreign to me in real life: I know few of them, but they fascinate me.

In what outfit do you feel powerful?
If I have to convince, at a press conference for example, I think about what I will wear and how to assert myself without imposing aggressiveness. My ideal outfit? A jacket not too strict, with a T-shirt, nice high-waisted pants, earrings and heels, because I feel like they give me more confidence to speak.

Are you a careerist?
No, but I like challenges. On a film, I draw in my head a mountain that I will climb. And I often go to roles that I have not yet had the opportunity to embody or that scare me a little, such as that of this woman lawyer who begins an affair with her minor stepson in Last Summer. But it is a fear that I would describe as an engine, an uncharted territory that is certainly destabilizing, but also very exciting.

In Last Summer, by Catherine Breillat, currently in theaters. In the series Sous contrôle, from October 5, 2023, on Arte.
