The latest WhatsApp update deletes the "Status" feature – which replaces it and why the change occurred at the popular messaging service.

Frankfurt – With the status function in WhatsApp Messenger, you could give your contacts information about the current availability, for example: "At school", "In appointment" or "Sleeps", for example, were popular perennial favorites. Often, however, the square was also filled with inspiring quotes, mottos or emojis. If you hadn't filled in the field yourself, the text "Hey there! I am using WhatsApp!" (german: "Hello there! I use WhatsApp!").

After the latest update of WhatsApp, however, the "Status" section is now to be omitted. The reason for this is the introduction of a new feature called "Channels" in the messaging service. Similar to the competing messaging service Telegram, celebrities, organizations, clubs and companies should be able to share news via a chat without opening the channel for messages from the recipients.

WhatsApp tab "Status" deleted – function is extended

Recipients will only be able to reply to the messages in the WhatsApp channel using emoji reactions – also similar to the feature that Telegram has been offering for some time. In the course of this, there will also be a revision of the "Status" tab. This disappears from the main menu and is replaced by a tab called "News".

In this menu, WhatsApp users can now decide what they want to share with their contacts. For example, the subscribed channels can be displayed, new channels can be found and photos or videos can be inserted. In addition, it should still be possible to submit status messages here. The status of a contact also remains available via their profile picture in the chat list.

WhatsApp update now available worldwide: The most frequently asked questions about the changes

Previously, the "Channels" feature was only available in certain countries, including Egypt, Chile, Malaysia, Morocco, Ukraine, Kenya, Peru, Singapore, and Colombia. However, in mid-September, WhatsApp began rolling out this feature globally. According to WhatsApp's official Twitter account ("X"), it will now be available globally.

To prevent confusion among WhatsApp users, the company answered the most common questions about the update publicly answered:

  • How do I find WhatsApp channels? – In the "News" tab, channels can be searched for
  • Why don't I see the function? – The option will only be visible once the latest update of WhatsApp has been installed
  • Can my contacts see which channels I'm subscribed to? – No, unless you're the channel admin

Another innovation could cause displeasure among users in the future: Recently, rumors circulated that WhatsApp will play out advertisements in the future. These have now been further fueled by insiders. For many users, on the other hand, a new way to protect themselves from prying eyes on their chat messages is pleasing. The messenger service is currently testing a function that is intended to strengthen the "secrecy of correspondence" of messages. (na)
