How much a dog's life in a shelter can change is shown in a recent TikTok video. There seems to be nothing left of the former bundle of energy.
A video posted on TikTok by Jackie Gonzalez, an employee of an animal shelter in Fresno, California, shows the enormous change of a dog that spent around 19 months there. The whole charisma, the energy and exuberance of the mongrel seems to be blown away. Instead, Kilowatt, as it is called, is just quiet, withdrawn and introverted. It seems she doesn't even want to say "hello" anymore. The shelter wants to sensitize people and draw attention to the fact that there are always dogs that are simply overlooked, but still worth loving.
Mixed breed is overlooked again and again
Jackie Gonzalez can't explain why Kilowatt hasn't been adopted yet. "I think they just missed them," she tells Newsweek. "Honestly, there's no real reason for it, because she's a great dog."
Unfortunately, the fates, such as those of Kilowatt, are being heard more and more frequently, as the number of surrendered dogs in the U.S. continues to rise, according to Newsweek, while adoption rates are falling. And in Germany, too, many animal shelters are overcrowded. The German Animal Welfare Association, for example, has expressed concern to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland: "The pet boom that we experienced during the Corona period is currently showing its consequences with full force. Every day, more and more people come forward who want to give up their animals."
However, finding a new home often depends on a chance encounter and the animal's ability to attract the attention of a new family. However, if you are reserved, anxious, shy or simply taken away by life as a four-legged friend, you often no longer have a chance. That's why some shelters are always trying to go other ways and use social media to draw attention to the wonderful dogs in the shelter.

My Area
According to an American study published in Applied Animal Behavior Science in 2014, people spend only about eight minutes with the animal during their visits to an animal shelter. And this is a relatively short period of time to make a big impression. So if you're visiting an animal shelter soon, plan a little more time to maybe find a true diamond among all the treasures.
The video reaches a lot of people on TikTok
And so Jackie Gonzalez posted the video of Kilowatt on TikTok, hoping that it will change her situation. Maybe the dog is lucky, because the clip now has over 1.5 million views. The users are full of compassion and hope that she will finally find a new home.
