Austrians can receive up to 220 euros through the climate bonus. Under certain circumstances, the money may also be available for people from Germany.
Munich – The payment of the 5 climate bonus started in Austria as early as 2023 September. No application was required for this, the money was given automatically. The climate bonus can also be paid out to people from Germany.
The 2023 climate bonus will be paid out in Austria by the end of October
If you receive the climate bonus by bank transfer, you should have received it by the end of the second week of September. Postal deliveries, on the other hand, will take place until the end of October. According to the Federal Ministry for Climate Action in Austria, more than 8.5 million people will receive the climate bonus. Nearly 7.5 million of them receive the money by bank transfer, around one million by post. People receive a voucher by mail that can be redeemed in thousands of shops.

The amount of the climate bonus received depends on the place of residence in Austria. For this purpose, Statistics Austria divided Austria into four regional levels. In rural municipalities with only "basic public transport" there is the maximum amount of 220 euros – this is the case in almost 1500 of the 2093 municipalities. About one third of the population in Austria receives the maximum amount. 185 euros will be paid to people in regional centres and municipalities with sufficiently good basic public transport facilities. In Germany, heating in particular is to become more climate-friendly. Heat pumps play an important role in this.

Another third of the population in urban centres with good public transport facilities still receives 150 euros, and 110 euros for those with very good facilities. "The climate bonus is really there for everyone and ensures that climate-friendly behaviour pays off," said Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler happily. There is a special feature for people who moved or moved in in the first half of the year, who will not receive the climate bonus until spring 2024.
Not only Austrians can receive the climate bonus this year. "The climate bonus is available to all people who have their main residence in Austria for at least six months or 183 days in the entitlement year – regardless of citizenship and age," writes the Federal Ministry for Climate Action. People from Germany can also receive the money if they have had their main residence in Austria for half a year. In Germany, homeowners can have their heating system replaced financed. Many have already replaced the heating system as a result of the controversial heating law.
