Brown rice from Norma and Rapunzel fails the eco-test and is no longer sold for health reasons.
Do you like to prepare rice dishes such as the Italian specialty Arancini Siciliani – fried rice balls from Sicily – or the Hawaiian trend recipe Poké Bowl? Then the quality of the rice should be interesting for you. Öko-Test has tested a total of 21 rice brands and published the full test results (behind the paywall). These include seven brown rice products, seven risotto rice products and seven different types of basmati rice. Among the dry foods tested, there are eleven with an organic seal. In its quality analysis, Öko-Test criticises heavy metals such as arsenic and cadmium, mineral oil components and pesticides.

From "very good" and "good" to "poor" and "inadequate", every grade is represented in the quality analysis. As Utopia reports, basmati rice and risotto rice products perform significantly better overall than the brown rice varieties tested. The following findings emerge from the report:
Kind | Provider | Name | Assessment | Price per 500 g |
---|---|---|---|---|
Basmati rice | Lidl | Golden Sun Organic Basmati Rice | Very good | 2,99 € |
Risotto rice | Dennree | Dennree Risotto Rice, white | Very good | 2,29 € |
Brown rice | Kaufland | K-Bio Long Grain | good | 1,25 € |
Brown rice | Edeka | Edeka Natural Rice | deficient | 1,09 € |
Risotto rice | Oryza | Oryza Risotto Rice | insufficient | 1,99 € |
Brown rice | Rapunzel | Long-grain top rice natural | insufficient | 2,69 € |
Brown rice | Norma | Organic Rice Natural Organic Sun | insufficient | 1,25 € |
Of course, the correct storage is also extremely important for the quality of rice.

Öko-Test: Dangerous pollutants in rice cause sales stop
On the one hand, the sale of Rapunzel's "Long Grain Top Rice Natural", which was rated "inadequate", was stopped due to cadmium contamination, as ZDF reports. On the other hand, the report shows that Norma's organic sun brown rice contained arsenic, mineral oil and spray poison – as well as the pesticide 1,2-dichloroethane.
An acute health impairment of children and adults through the consumption of this rice sample is therefore possible in principle.
Federal Institute for Risk Assessment
According to the ZDF report, the value would be exceeded eleven times in a healthy adult 60-kg person with just one portion. According to the report, the supplier Norma confirmed the results of the eco-test and in its own quality analysis and subsequently removed the product from its range. Again and again, Öko-Test analyses foodstuffs, such as butter brands, but also canned tomatoes cannot escape the judgment of Öko-Test.
