Highlights: Excavations in Jordan are evidence that one of the Bible's most dramatic and improbable stories may literally be true. Scientists have previously found evidence that the ancient city of Tell el-Hammam in the southern Jordan Valley was destroyed in a catastrophic event. Dr. John Bergsma, a professor of theology at Ohio Franciscan University, claims that such an event reflects what the Bible says. According to the book of Genesis, God showered brimstone and fire on the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah because of the sins of their inhabitants - which wiped them out.

An ancient city destroyed in an "atomic explosion" is the biblical city of Sodom, according to a biblical scholar. Senior theologian Dr. John Bergsma says excavations carried out in Jordan are evidence that one of the Bible's most dramatic and improbable stories may be true.

The theologian claims that archaeological finds found in Jordan are proof that the biblical city of Sodom really existed. Scientists have previously found evidence that the ancient city of Tell el-Hammam in the southern Jordan Valley was destroyed in a catastrophic event — and Dr. John Bergsma, a professor of theology at Ohio Franciscan University, claims that such an event reflects what the Bible says.According to the book of Genesis, God showered brimstone and fire on the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah because of the sins of their inhabitants - which completely wiped them out.

Examples of such destruction were seen at Tel el-Hammam and the testimonies found completely changed Dr. Bergsama's perspective on the truth of the biblical story. He recalled evidence of extreme heat on skeletons and pottery fragments found by archaeologists, which could have been proof of a direct hit from an asteroid.

This is what the site looks like at Tel el-Hammam - is it Sodom?

About 3,600 years ago, the city of Tel el-Hammam prospered, and was significantly larger and stronger than Jerusalem or Jericho. But almost overnight she disappeared. The lack of signs of a blockade in the ruins indicated that what destroyed Tel al-Hammam and its neighbor was not a military attack.

Stephen Collins, chief archaeologist at Tel el-Hammam, told Dr. Bergsma about some of the amazing finds. He discovered, among other things, that pieces of pottery unearthed at the site were covered with trinitite - "this layer of glass that you get when you detonate an atomic bomb in the desert and it melts the sand," Dr. Bergsma explained, adding: "They also started finding human remains. Human skeletons are intact up to about half of the spine and then there are only scorch marks and nothing on the upper part of the body. They find massive evidence that a huge burst of heat from the sky burned these twin cities on the Jordanian side of the river."

Stephen Collins compared the destruction to the Tunguska event of 1908, when a giant asteroid struck the Earth's atmosphere over Siberia, causing widespread destruction. He added: "The proposed air burst was larger than the 1908 explosion over Tunguska, Russia, where a 50-meter-wide bomb exploded with 1,000 times more energy than the atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima."

The burst of air also appears to have produced large amounts of salt, according to James Kent, an associate professor of earth sciences at the University of California—in what will remind some of you of the story of Lot's wife who became a salt commissioner after the destruction of Sodom. While Collins is confident in his conclusions, some archaeologists have accused him of recklessly jumping to conclusions without enough evidence on the ground.

The story of Sodom and the sister city of Gomorrah is one of the best-known stories in the Bible. Abraham bargained with God to spare Sodom - even then synonymous with sin - to save its few righteous inhabitants, but God was not willing to hear about it. " And Jehovah showered Sedam and Umrah with brimstone and fire from heaven. And you shall become the Awake, the Lord, and the All-Kakar, and the All-Inhabitants of the Awake, and the Plant of the Earth," the Book of Genesis reads. Avraham looks at it the next morning and sees, "Vaishkaf on the face of Saddam and Amr'eh and 'El-Kol-Pan'i 'Eretz the Kachar and Yi'ra, and the Na'ah went up to Kit'er Ha'aretz as Kit'er the sheep."
