The German Publishing Prize was awarded to 64 independent publishers. The top three winners can look forward to 60,000 euros each.
It is a "commitment to books as a cultural asset", said Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth at the award ceremony for the German Publishing Prize 2023 in Berlin. They are invaluable for any living democracy. In Berlin, 64 independent publishers were awarded. In total, prize money of over 1.2 million euros was distributed.

German Publishing Award 2023: Three frontrunners
Three publishers can currently look forward to 60,000 euros each. The frontrunners at the German Publishing Award:
- Rotopol (Kassel, Hesse): Comics and picture books for children and adults as well as art prints, paper games, postcards and sketchbooks
- Das Wunderhorn (Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg): Contemporary prose and poetry, art, contemporary history and politics as well as regionalia
- Zuckersüß Verlag (Berlin): Children's books
They will each receive 60,000 euros in prize money. A further 60 publishers received a bonus of 24,000 euros each. In total, the Minister of State will receive prize money of 1,620,000 euros, reports the industry magazine buchreport. It is not the first time Rotopol and Das Wunderhorn have received the German Publishing Award: Rotopol has already received awards in 2020 and 2022, Das Wunderhorn in 2019, 2020 and 2022.

Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth in her statement: "As an invitation to a change of perspective, books have always unfolded their very own power. That is why they are invaluable for any living democracy – just like the many publishers who make the full wealth of voices and opinions visible on the literary map. And where elsewhere important platforms for books are currently being lost due to savings in the cultural sector, independent publishers in particular remain true to their claim to convey culture, education and information. In view of the enormous competitive pressure in the publishing business, this deserves our support more than ever. It is therefore all the more pleasing that the Federal Government's KulturPass has so far provided a strong tailwind with book purchases worth almost three million euros. Together with the awarding of the fifth German Publishing Prize tonight, this is a strong commitment by our country to the book as a cultural asset."
These other publishers will each receive 24,000 euros:

An independent jury selected the winners from 358 applications. Essential criteria are an innovative publishing program and the quality of the publishing work. Recently, there has been repeated criticism of this prize, according to buchreport, as some publishers have been awarded more often.
