From 2024, Amazon will advertise on its streaming platform. If you want to continue watching films and series ad-free, you have to pay more.
Munich – Prime subscription and still advertising – this is to be the case with the streaming offer of the online retailer Amazon from 2024. In the future, additional advertising will be shown. This was announced by Amazon on Friday (22 September). Already in the summer there were indications of such a change.
Amazon Prime: Streaming service plans advertising in Prime subscription from 2024
While the Amazon Group is mostly a topic of conversation because of delivery stories, changes to Prime Video are now the topic. According to the report, the important markets such as the USA, Great Britain, Canada and Germany are initially affected by advertising when streaming. The decision is intended to prevent the Prime Video subscription from becoming more expensive, the group justifies. Currently, such a subscription costs 8.99 euros per month, in the USA 14.99 dollars. In 2024, prices are to remain "unchanged", according to the Prime Video platform. So the price remains the same, but the offer does not.
Films and series will therefore "contain advertising to a limited extent" from next year, it says. No comment was made on the exact amount of advertising, for example as a commercial break. The goal, however, is "to show significantly less advertising than linear TV channels and other video streaming providers."
Subscription version: Ad-free Amazon Prime subscription for a surcharge
Those who want to continue to use the video offers ad-free will have to pay more from 2024. The surcharge is expected to cost $2.99 a month in the US. The amount of the additional fee in other countries has not yet been published – according to Amazon, they will be announced at a later date. It is unclear whether Amazon will be completely ad-free again with this option. Currently, Prime Video runs commercials for movies and series on the platform before movies and series episodes. The clips can be skipped, but not disabled.
Streaming services: Netflix also with an advertising version
Other streaming platforms such as Netflix have already implemented such advertising changes, the service provider announced on its website. Last year, a version with advertisements before and during the series was launched. The subscription with advertising is therefore almost 8 euros cheaper than the ad-free version. Four to five minutes of advertising per hour are integrated – with clips of 15 or 30 seconds.
