Gradual aging at 34, 60 and 78? Ageing researcher knows how to slow down the process

Highlights: U.S. scientists say biological aging happens by leaps and bounds in the fourth, seventh and eighth decade of life. Proteins in the blood play an essential role in the aging process. Only a few minutes a day should be enough to rejuvenate or live longer, says researcher Sven Voelpel. The extent to which the intake of dietary supplements makes sense with an otherwise balanced diet is controversial, says the German Nutrition Society. The body has numerous endogenous antioxidants that we can activate through exercise and sport, says Professor Marc Birringer.

A new study aims to prove that we do not age gradually, but gradually – namely in three decades. Proteins in the blood play an essential role.

Why do some people look like 40 at 30? Genetic predisposition plays an essential role, but lifestyle also has an immense impact on our aging process. A new study by US scientists at Stanford University now claims to have found that biological aging is not a gradual process, but happens by leaps and bounds – namely in the fourth, seventh and eighth decade of life. These three ages are crucial for biological aging because they bring enormous changes to the body, the researchers said.

For the study, the Stanford researchers analyzed the blood plasma of 4,263 people between the ages of 18 and 95 and examined it for 2,925 plasma proteins. They came to the conclusion that in the 30s, 60s and 70s, the number of proteins in the blood plasma changes significantly. These "aging jumps" of the body would have an influence on the development of diseases, among other things. "This new approach to studying aging led to the identification of unexpected signatures and pathways that could provide potential targets for age-related diseases," the study said.

Rejuvenating supplements? Balanced diet eliminates the need for pills

Ageing researcher Professor Sven Voelpel explains the role of proteins in the body in an interview with Bild: "Proteins are the building blocks of life, which means we live through proteins," and adds: "In the study, around 3,000 proteins were examined and it was noticed that there are these relapses where the proteins are no longer present to the good extent and that's why there is a kind of abrupt aging." But the genes can be changed by our behavior, says Voelpel. According to him, only a few minutes a day should be enough to rejuvenate or live longer. He sees the solution in dietary supplements. "I myself take a mixture of vital substances every morning, in which I get all the vitamins, minerals, enzymes, probiotic bacteria and fiber," says Voelpel. In this way, the metabolic processes are optimally supported, which can slow down the aging process. 24vita.de explains the influence of diet on the aging process.

The extent to which the intake of dietary supplements makes sense with an otherwise balanced diet is controversial. The German Nutrition Society is also critical of this and quotes, among others, Professor Marc Birringer from Fulda University of Applied Sciences, who advises against dietary supplements and appeals to change our diet and lifestyle: "The body has numerous endogenous antioxidants that we can activate through exercise and sport, the avoidance of obesity and a varied diet", says Birringer. According to current knowledge, healthy adults get all the important nutrients by eating a varied and as natural as possible diet. According to the DGE, ready-made products that contain a lot of industrial sugar and salt should only be eaten very rarely and meat and other animal products in moderation. Fresh fruits and vegetables, legumes, herbs, seeds, seeds and whole grains, on the other hand, should be eaten frequently.

In addition to a varied diet, the following factors are also said to have a rejuvenating effect, according to aging researcher Sven Voelpel:

  • a positive attitude towards life
  • lots of exercise
  • sufficient relaxation
  • healthy sleep
  • a lot of social interaction
