"Fifteen years after the start of the Crime Novel series, today we are ready to announce the new series Crime Novel: The Origins and Gomorrah: The Origins, we have started and are in the active phase of writing. Now we have the right distance to be able to do it." This was stated by one of the producers Nils Hartmann, EVP Sky Studios for Italy and Germany, in the panel on the two projects during the second day of Sky 20 years, an event organized from 2 to 4 October at the National Roman Museum in the Baths of Diocletian in Rome. "These are series that have settled and have remained in the Italian imagination - adds Riccardo Tozzi, co-producer with Cattleya (part of ITV Studios), the company from which both Sky Original productions were born. For the prequels, "there is a lot of potential and unexplored areas, it's a bit like it was 20 years before, a call to arms. And I must say that even from the first things that came out of the writing you can see that that world is alive there are many potentialities for storytelling, they are different series but we are in that world there".
When "they called me I was excited - adds Giancarlo de Cataldo, magistrate and author of Romanzo Criminale (from Einaudi) from which the mother series is taken as well as the subject of the series - to see Nils and Riccardo around that table, to breathe that atmosphere again". Even for two of the screenwriters of Gomorrah, Maddalena Ravagli and Leonardo Fasoli, working on the origins "is a bit like returning to the old cursed house that you miss in the end. In writing the first series of Gomorrah, we followed the evolution of reality, but we were also immersed in the evolution of the first war of Scampia and Secondigliano, in how the Camorra had taken root in the territory - says Ravagli -. Finally we had the chance to give substance to this material". Gomorrah, from the homonymous best seller by Roberto Saviano, sold in over 190 territories worldwide, in fifth place in the New York Times ranking among the most important non-American TV series of the decade 2010-2020, starts again in the prequel from the criminal rise of the boss Pietro Savastano, from when he was just a street boy to become the most important and ruthless boss of Naples. "The starting year is 1977 - adds the screenwriter -. Already in some seasons of Gomorrah we also wanted to understand how there are communicating vessels between the civil world and crime. For example, a certain female emancipation also filters into these environments." Without betraying the stylistic aspect "it is nice to tell how a certain spirit enters the characters and animates them as an unfulfilled promise. Going back is a bit like wondering how you can become like that."
For the origins of Romanzo Criminale "we are in a period immediately preceding the facts of both the book and the series - underlines De Cataldo -. We go even more into the psychology of the characters who have entered everyone's hearts and we are thinking of mixing the environments more, with a penetration of the low world into the high world, which corresponds to those years, where there were those who said that the criminal world would lead us to revolution and there was the spread of drugs in those environments ". We will focus on the years before the rise of the Banda della Magliana: a story of Roman crime that takes place before the events told in the two seasons of the series but that hooks to its characters. "The series that take the audience are those that have a heart and a soul - explains Tozzi -. The soul of Crime Novel is youthful rebellion, a vital power. For Gomorrah it is the tragic aspect, the reference to Shakespeare, the king the princes... A structure that must remain because the public feels wrapped in embraced ".
