Italy is the world's leading pasta producer, with 3.6 million tons and a turnover of almost 7 billion euros. One pasta dish out of four consumed in the world is Made in Italy and in 25 years the export share has tripled (+210%). While world pasta production is close to 17 million tons (+1.8% on 2021), doubling the 9 million in 1998. A success without borders that will be celebrated on a global scale on Wednesday 25 October during World Pasta Day, which celebrates its 25th anniversary.

From 1998 to the present day, pasta has won its global challenge on several fronts. According to data processed by the Italian Food Union and IPO (International Pasta Organisation), Italy, in addition to being a leader in production, is also the country that eats the most (with 23 kg per capita per year, ahead of Tunisia with 17 kg and Venezuela with 12 kg), for a total of 1.3 million tons consumed in 2022. 25% of the pasta consumed in the world and 75% consumed in Europe are produced by an Italian pasta factory.

More than half of the pasta produced in Italy ends up abroad. Germany, the United Kingdom, France, the United States and Japan are confirmed as the most receptive countries, purchasing a total of about 58% of Italian pasta exports (2,187 million euros). Among emerging markets, Saudi Arabia (+51%), Poland (+25%) and Canada (+20%) also performed well.

Numbers aside, in these 25 years pasta has evolved, its knowledge by the consumer has increased, it has been reinterpreted and adapted to new lifestyles. On the horizon for the next 25 years, according to one in two Italians (59%), pasta will learn new types with alternative flours or ingredients, will be stored in more ecological and biodegradable packaging (52.6%) and will see the addition of many new shapes (35.4%).
