Giorgia Meloni is among the most influential in Europe. In the list of personalities of 2024 chosen by POLITICO Europe, the Italian prime minister takes first place in the 'Doers' category, the most active and concrete leaders in the implementation of their policies. Meloni is described as a "chameleon", capable of defying "expectations" and surprising in her policy towards Russia.
"The next election year will be crucial for Meloni, who is also president of the European Conservatives and Reformists," the newspaper points out, noting that it is "no secret that the center-right European People's Party has courted the Italian leader, perhaps with an eye on a post-election alliance that could reshape the European political landscape."
Earning the Palme d'Or is actually the possible future Polish prime minister Donald Tusk, identified as "the wind of change". In the same category as Meloni, however, in second place is the president of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and in third place the French president Emmanuel Macron.
In the class of 'Disrupters', the subversives, the president of the Russian Central Bank, Elvira Nabiullina, is crowned, who "keeps Russian President Vladimir Putin's war machine running". While leading the troop of the 'Dreamers', the dreamers, is Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, "the marathon runner" called upon to win the war against Moscow. The question on Politico's mind is whether "he will be able to do it and at what cost."
"The recognition of President Meloni's role and influence as 'Politico' is certainly important and prestigious but it is certainly not a surprise but rather a confirmation of what has already been evident for some time," said the Minister for European Affairs, the South, Cohesion Policies and the NRRP Raffaele Fitto released in a statement. "During the election campaign, sometimes out of simple ignorance, more often for instrumental reasons, the specter of apocalyptic scenarios for Italy and Europe in the event of a Giorgia Meloni victory had been raised," Fitto continues, "but the reality proved to be quite different and the first to understand it were precisely the Italian citizens who wanted to trust her and the center-right coalition." "In just over a year, President Meloni has been able to demonstrate extraordinary ability both in governing Italy and in foreign policy, restoring it to a leading role. It is pleasing," concludes Minister Fitto, "that the international press recognizes and emphasizes this circumstance."
