  • In Germany, firewood for private use may generally be collected in forests if it is already on the ground and the amount is appropriate for personal use. This wood is also known as reading wood.
  • Twigs and branches may only have a maximum diameter of ten centimeters.
  • Neither a tree may be felled nor branches branched off for firewood. Only the wood that is already on the ground is allowed.
  • According to Utopia.de, there are protected areas in some forests, for example because offspring of animals are in the offspring. These areas may not be entered while collecting wood. Also, it is only allowed to pick up reading wood during the day.
  • If you use damp wood in the fireplace, you risk damage to the fireplace and have to expect high smoke development, as Heizsparer.de knows. In addition, wood with a water content of more than 20 percent is difficult to ignite and is less efficient at heating.

But if you want to dry wood yourself, you have to be aware that this is a lengthy matter: you have to expect at least a year if you do it right. However, it is faster with narrow branches, which are usually found on the ground in the forest. These dry within a few days if you put them in the sun.

Wood should also only ever be split and stored outdoors. According to Utopia.de, a roof overhang or a shed that is as airy as possible is suitable for storage.
