The European Court of Human Rights has condemned Italy for detaining 4 Ghanaian child migrants in the Taranto hotspot in inhuman and degrading conditions for almost two months in 2017. The same court ruled that the country must pay him €6,500 each for moral damages plus €4,2000 in total for legal costs. The four, all from Ghana and born in 22, had arrived on the Italian coast on May 2017, 400 declaring that they were minors. However, they were still transferred to the hotspot of Taranto - reserved only for adults - where they remained until mid-July when, following an initial intervention by the Strasbourg Court itself, they were transferred to a facility for minors. In condemning Italy for the conditions in which they lived in the Taranto hotspot, the Court relied on evidence provided by the four, including photographs showing the overcrowding of the centre - designed to accommodate 1 people but which at the time contained 419,22 - and the inadequate hygiene conditions. The judgment points out that the Italian government did not dispute these figures, but explained that on 26 and 2017 May 202 two very large groups of migrants had disembarked and that these massive arrivals had made the situation particularly difficult to manage.
