On the red laterite track that leads from Kisumu to Siaya province (Kenya), you have to slalom between waterlogged holes and ruts to avoid getting bogged down. The dry season is now just a memory, swept away by the umbrella season. But this morning, the violent nighttime thunderstorms gave way to a blazing sun and Lake Victoria woke up without a shadow of a cloud. On the island of Ndeda, a 45-minute dugout canoe ride from Southby Harbour, the uniformly blue sky is a blessing.
