The word waffle comes from the 19th century and means something like "to talk nonsense" or "to tell you nonsense". So if you don't have anyone on the waffle, you are not completely clean or have a bird on you.

Fancy juicy and fluffy waffles? Thanks to buttermilk, the dough is perfect and if you don't have buttermilk in the house, you can make it yourself from just two ingredients.

The smell of freshly baked waffles in the house brings back memories of fun children's birthday parties, contemplative Christmas markets and cozy Sunday afternoons at the grandparents' house. Because the popular pastry simply tastes good at any time of the year and for any occasion. Whether with powdered sugar, nut nougat cream or cherries – waffles are popular with young and old alike, as long as they are soft on the inside and nice and crispy on the outside. This can be achieved with the perfect dough, which gets exactly this desired consistency thanks to buttermilk.

But waffles don't always have to be made from a batter. After all, everything that comes out of the waffle iron is a waffle. Waffle hot dogs or cheeseburger waffles serve as proof, and for dessert a few sweet croffles, a mixture of croissant and waffles. Brilliant, isn't it?

Back to the classic basic recipe. The simple waffles with buttermilk are particularly moist and fluffy. The buttermilk gives the dough a creamy consistency and makes the waffles nice and fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside.

For fluffy buttermilk waffles you need these ingredients:

  • 250 g butter, softened
  • 200 g sugar
  • 1 packet of vanilla sugar
  • 5 eggs
  • 500 g flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 250 ml buttermilk

The basic recipe can be varied as desired. For example, you can replace 100 grams of flour with cocoa powder for chocolate waffles. The same goes for nut waffles with ground hazelnuts or almonds. And for a Christmas treat, stir a teaspoon of cinnamon or gingerbread spice into the dough.

The preparation of the waffle dough is simple:

  • Beat butter, sugar and vanilla sugar with a hand mixer until fluffy. Add eggs. Mix flour with baking powder and stir in as well. Add the buttermilk and stir until a homogeneous dough is formed.
  • Heat up a waffle iron (for Belgian or heart waffles) and grease it with a little cooking oil. Pour a ladle (more or less, depending on the waffle iron) into the waffle iron and fry until golden brown. Bake the waffles one at a time until the batter is used up.
  • Serve the waffles while still warm, dusted with powdered sugar. Serve with applesauce.
  • Classically, waffles are served dusted with powdered sugar. But applesauce, cherries or nut nougat cream also taste good with buttermilk waffles. (Symbolic image) © Westend61/IMAGO

What to do if the buttermilk is missing?

If you spontaneously feel like delicious waffles, but don't have buttermilk at home, you don't have to despair. Because you can simply make buttermilk yourself from milk and a little lemon juice or neutral vinegar.

To do this, stir the acidifier into the milk and let it rest for about 15 minutes until the milk thickens. For 200 milliliters of buttermilk, take the same amount of milk and add about a tablespoon of lemon juice.

With these creative waffle recipes, you definitely don't have anyone on the waffle

According to the proverb, if you have one on the waffle, you are not completely clean or have a bird. The phrase most likely does not refer to the waffle iron and therefore the delicious pastry itself, but has its origin elsewhere. The verb "waffles" from the 19th century means something like "to chatter" or "to tell nonsense". So if you talked too much and also unclearly back then, you just had someone on the waffle.

If sweet Belgian waffles with powdered sugar are too boring for you in the long run, you should definitely try this recipe for chicken and waffles "Mexican Style". © Simply Tasty

Fortunately, the word can also be associated with positive things or recipes. The next night of football at a friend's house, Mexican-style chicken and waffles will get fans cheering, while the hearty vegetable waffles with smoked salmon are perfect for brunch. And in the end, it gets a little crazy with the brightly colored rainbow waffles.
