Charlize Theron won't have to be ashamed of her successor. Warner Bros. has unveiled an impressive first trailer for Furiosa, the fifth installment of George Miller's Mad Max saga. Anya Taylor-Joy plays a younger version of the warrior who starred in the cult film Mad Max: Fury Road. The reveal of the Netflix miniseries The Queen's Game deploys a hypnotic charisma and slingshot. This clip also promises desert rides, chases, explosions and memorable bravura bits.
Furiosa is a prequel. This prologue takes place several decades before all the feature films in the franchise that made Mel Gibson famous. "As the world falls apart, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Land of Mothers and finds herself in the hands of a horde of bikers led by the warlord Dementus. As two Tyrants vie for dominance of the Citadel, Furiosa survives many trials while trying to fulfill her promise to return home across the Wasteland," Furiosa's synopsis promises.
A preview at Cannes?
Expected in theaters at the end of May 2024, Furiosa could hope, like Fury Road, to have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Starring Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy, who struggled to get along on set, Fury Road grossed $400 million at the box office and received ten Oscar nominations.
Furiosa's credits promise to be an "odyssey" and features Chris Hemsworth. Marvel's Thor plays the monstrous and antagonistic Dementus. "He's a complicated individual. He is a very violent, mad and brutal person, born in the Wasteland. He's a product of his environment," says the Australian actor, who says he had his best experience in front of the camera thanks to this role. He added to the audience at the CCXP convention in Brazil: "He was born in a space where you have to kill or be killed. He learned to rule with an iron fist. He has a charisma and a very manipulative temperament."
