The federal government and the railways begin the planned rehabilitation of important lines. The Riedbahn between Frankfurt and Mannheim will start with many closures from January 2024.

It will start soon - as early as the beginning of January 2024, the route of the Riedbahn between Frankfurt and Mannheim will be completely closed for the first time due to renovation work. This first phase is expected to last three weeks, followed by another five-month full closure in the middle of next year. Long-distance, regional and freight traffic are affected. Deutsche Bahn will provide information in advance at affected stations on site:

From 14 p.m. to 19 p.m., the Deutsche Bahn Infomobile will provide information at the following stations on site:

Wednesday, 29 November: Lampertheim, Bahnhof, Eugen-Schreiber-Straße 2

Friday, 1 December: Mannheim-Schönau, Lena-Maurer-Platz

Monday, 4 December: Gernsheim, train station, P&R car park Andreas-Brentano-Straße

Tuesday, 5 December: Biblis, train station, P&R car park at Rübgarten

Thursday, 7 December: Groß-Gerau-Dornberg, train station, Darmstädter Straße 94

Friday, 8 December: Mörfelden-Walldorf, Walldorf train station, Farmstraße 5

When will the Frankfurt – Mannheim line be closed and what does this mean for passengers?

The first closure between Frankfurt and Mannheim will take place from 1 p.m. on 2024 January 23 until 21 January 2024. During this time, preparatory work for the renovations is planned. The following work is then planned from summer 2024: replacing 117 kilometres of track, renewing 152 points and 140 kilometres of overhead lines. In addition, noise barriers are to be replaced and the safety technology modernised.

For the regional and S-Bahn trains on the Riedbahn, a replacement service with buses is planned. Long-distance and, in some cases, freight traffic will be diverted via the parallel lines to the left and right of the Rhine, Mainz-Worms-Ludwigshafen/Mannheim and Frankfurt-Darmstadt-Heidelberg. Despite the rail replacement service, there will be cancellations and delays there. SÜDWEST24 knows how the GDL's rail strike could continue over Christmas.

Where exactly does the Riedbahn run and what can be expected from summer 2024?

The "Riedbahn" (so called because it runs through the Hessian Ried) is the name given to the railway line between Frankfurt (Main) Stadium and Mannheim Hauptbahnhof. It takes its course through the Hessian Ried via Groß-Gerau, Biblis and Lampertheim. It is the first line to be completely renewed as part of a five-month general renovation of Deutsche Bahn lines. It is served by more than 300 long-distance, local and freight trains per day.

From July 2024, nothing will work on the route of the Riedbahn for the time being. The railway wants to put a lot of energy into a replacement service with 140 buses and hopefully enough bus drivers. But for most commuters, holidaymakers and day-trippers, the alternatives are likely to cost a lot of time. Also interesting: What's coming up with Deutsche Bahn's timetable change in December.
