The Deutschlandticket can now be used as a ticket on three other long-distance connections. This is made possible by a special railway exception.
Berlin – With the 49-euro ticket, an all-encompassing public transport ticket for the whole of Germany has been available since May 2023. All buses and trains can be used with the standard subscription, only the long-distance services of Deutsche Bahn or Flixtrain are excluded from this – actually. In some cases, the Deutschlandticket can be used for IC and ICE connections. Since 24 November, this has included three long-distance routes in Berlin and Brandenburg.
On which IC and ICE connections Germany tickets are also valid
- Berlin Hauptbahnhof – Airport BER – Doberlug-Kirchhain – Elsterwerda (IC trains and ICE 1076)
- Berlin Südkreuz/Berlin Spandau – Berlin Gesundbrunnen – Prenzlau (all IC and ICE trains)
- Potsdam – Berlin Hauptbahnhof – Cottbus (IC 2431/2432 only)
On 23 November, the Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB) announced the new exemptions for the Deutschlandticket. Accordingly, these were negotiated with DB long-distance transport on behalf of the states of Berlin and Brandenburg. According to Deutsche Bahn, in addition to IC or ICE, Railjet trains (RJ) can also be used on the three routes through Berlin and Brandenburg. And all this at no extra charge.

Use IC and ICE with a local transport ticket – that's why it's possible
Deutsche Bahn has already made similar exemptions with other federal states. In most cases, all local transport tickets are also valid for long-distance transport. In some cases, however, the Deutschlandticket, for example, is not part of the agreement.
The reason for this is often that these routes are also used by many commuters, making it easier to get to work. In these cases, there is usually a lack of good alternatives in regional or local transport. For this reason, the corresponding IC or ICE trains are also used as local transport connections on the sections mentioned: Berlin-Cottbus (RE56), Elsterwerda-Berlin (RE17) and Berlin-Prenzlau (RE28). In Berlin and Brandenburg in particular, however, the lines for long-distance trains are also economically difficult to operate. However, since the federal states still want to maintain them, they are paying Deutsche Bahn additional financial aid.

Use ICE or IC in case of delays: Further exemption severely restricted
In the past, travelers could also use IC or ICE trains with local tickets if the scheduled train was at least 20 minutes late. However, in mid-August 2023, this Deutschlandticket exemption rule was severely restricted. Now, passengers can usually only travel on long-distance trains late in the evening or at night in the event of serious delays. (os)
