Syke – There are endless scams, especially on the Internet. This is also the case with classified ads, where there are numerous scam methods. A Reddit user also had to go through this experience. Because just a few minutes after she had advertised a product, several attempts were made to scam her. A common method on the platform. But how do you recognize this scam?

Classifieds scam: E-mail address should be provided

"A full 5 minutes after I placed the ad, already two attempts," the classifieds user writes in a Reddit post. To do this, she provides a screenshot of a chat history with the alleged fraudster. The seller suggests using the "Secure Payment" payment method, to which the seller agrees. But then she is asked to share her email address.

"I click the pay button, but I run into a problem. I'm prompted to enter your email address. Please write them down," the scammer said. The saleswoman responds with the words: "You're only the second person to try this today, make a new account."

These scams, especially in connection with the "Secure Payment" method, are not uncommon. The police crime prevention of the federal states and the federal government also warns of the scam on its website. According to this, supposed interested parties ask for payment via the "Secure Payment" payment method and want telephone numbers or e-mail addresses for this.

"Secure Payment" scam: What you can look out for

  • Processing payment data only via the message function of classifieds
  • Do not give out credit card details
  • Don't follow payment requests that aren't displayed directly on the classifieds website/apps

Important to know: Classifieds does not send messages with the "Secure Payment" payment method and does not ask the seller to pass on credit card details. As the portal explains on its website, "all the necessary steps are displayed directly in the message history of the classifieds account."

For this reason, telephone number and e-mail address should be kept as private as possible. It is not only in classifieds that there is the problem of scams. Other online services, such as PayPal or WhatsApp, are also struggling with the perpetrators.
