"Not a retrospective but a snapshot": this is how Giorgio Armani defines the exhibition Aldo Fallai for Giorgio Armani, 1977-2021, which opened in the Armani/Silos spaces scheduled until 11 August.
Curated by Giorgio Armani himself, together with Rosanna Armani and Leo Dell'Orco, the exhibition traces a partnership that began in the mid-seventies, even before the designer's adventure as a soloist, and then continued until the early <>s and resumed in recent years. At the time of the first meeting, Armani was a young freelance designer; Fallai, a graduate of the Art Institute, is a graphic designer with a passion for photography. The understanding was immediate: if Armani was the first to realize the social changes taking place, Fallai accompanied him in the definition of a new imaginary in which cinematic evocations and neorealist hints were mixed with echoes of late Renaissance and Mannerist painting, in a mise-en-scène always imbued with life and therefore profoundly authentic.
The use of black and white was the winning choice for immediate and timeless images, so much so that in the exhibition, they have no captions to indicate the year. A choice in perfect coherence with the Armani style, so much so that the photos - although created to accompany collections - are first and foremost portraits or frames from a feature film, such as the splendid image of Antonia Dell'Atte from behind, chosen as a poster. A partnership, too, that has never been interrupted over the years, so much so that it was Antonia Dell'Atte herself, who arrived at the inauguration to open the exhibition, explaining to the Silos staff that she was the woman on the exhibition poster.
The narrative path of the exhibition unfolds on two floors and collects, in strict random order - a concept that only Armani can coexist in harmony - about two hundred and fifty shots, from the photo with the tigrotto, taken in Palermo, when the troupe took refuge on a rainy day at the Togni circus, to the statues of the Foro Italico, translated into a play of sharp and graphic shadows.
"Working with Aldo - said Giorgio Armani in splendid shape - allowed me, right from the start, to transform the fantasy I had in mind into real images: that my clothes were not only made in a certain way, with certain colors and materials, but represented a way of being, of living. Because style, for me, is a total expression. Together, in a dialogue that is always fluid and concrete, we have created scenes of life, evoked atmospheres, sketched portraits full of character. And reviewing all the work done today, I myself am struck by the strong suggestion that these shots can still emanate, and by Aldo's great ability to capture the nuances of personality".
"I have vivid memories of the thirty years of our collaboration," added Fallai. The productions were always agile, streamlined: the result was obtained with few means and without special effects. That, I think, has made inroads with the public." In Armani's heart, however, even today, there is a recurring thought: "I hope with great anxiety - he confided to ANSA - that what is happening in the Middle East will be resolved".
