WhatsApp users are in for changes in 2024. Android users probably don't like the fact that a service is paid for them. But which one?
Bremen – WhatsApp is still one of the most popular messenger services around the world. Users can look forward to some changes in 2024 as the app continues to evolve – but not everything is likely to please.
These changes are coming to WhatsApp users in 2024
As early as December 2023, a new WhatsApp change may not have tasted good at all to some users. Until now, it was free of charge for Android users to back up the app to Google Drive. This ensured that all messages were stored and could not be lost. This was made possible by an agreement between Google and WhatsApp's parent company Meta. The back-up can only be created free of charge up to a size of 15 gigabytes – above that it will be subject to a fee.

For 1.99 euros per month, Android users can use 100 gigabytes of storage space, 200 gigabytes cost one euro more. On the other hand, it is positive for many WhatsApp users that more is to be invested in data protection. As WABetaInfo had written in a post, a new feature could soon be introduced through which an alternative profile picture as well as a second name can be set. This secondary information is then displayed to contacts who do not have access to the primary profile information. Another privacy feature was already expanded in the middle of the year.
Changes to Whatsapp: New emojis could be available in 2024
The change in the second information is interesting for WhatsApp users who want to limit visibility to only a few contacts. It should also be possible to set up a username. This can be used to find users if friends don't have their mobile phone number ready, but want to contact them via WhatsApp. It is still uncertain whether communication between WhatsApp and other messenger services will be possible in 2024.
Due to the "Digital Market Act" (DMA), the market is supposed to become clearer and fairer, the big companies have to adapt willy-nilly. As WABetaInfo reports, this could make it possible to communicate in WhatsApp with contacts from Telegram, Signal and Co. Another change could be new emojis in WhatsApp. In addition to the 750 emojis so far, some are to be added, as crast.net reported - these may also be available in other apps. (rd)
