The numbers of Don Carlo staged yesterday at La Scala in Milan tell of a first round at pre-Covid levels, starting with the box office data.
With 1888 spectators, perhaps Giuseppe Verdi's most complex opera in the staging directed by Lluis Pasqual brought in the theater's coffers two million 582 thousand euros, over 80 thousand more than last year, but also 23 thousand more than Tosca, the opera that inaugurated the season in 2019 before the pandemic.
On television, the opera, which thanks to Rai Cultura was broadcast live on Rai 1, broadcast in 4k for the first time, was followed by 1 million 411 thousand viewers, numbers down compared to last year's Boris Godunov and far from the record of 2 million 850 thousand of Tosca. But Tosca is better known and Don Carlo 'suffers' from its four-hour length (moreover of beautiful music).
More than 130 journalists from 11 countries were accredited to the Sant'Ambrogio event, but many also followed the show through social media.
On Tiktok (where in one week La Scala had 12,160 new followers) there was a live broadcast of 1 hour and 20 minutes that began at 17.55 pm showing the backstage with interviews with the workers and all those who contributed to the show (from the choristers to the stage manager, from the chief stagehand to the tailors and make-up artists) which had 30,700 views, 28,300 distinct viewers, peak 1,900 viewers, 17,900 likes.
The 40 behind-the-scenes Instagram stories helped reach 229,436 accounts with 15,954 profile visits, while Facebook posts cross-posted with Rai Cultura had a reach of 364,447 users and 10,622 interactions.
On X (ex-Twitter) the hashtag #PrimaScala was among the top 5 trends in Italy. The first was told with 30 tweets and had 153,530 impressions.
Yesterday alone, the Theatre's website had about 65,7 visits.
Don Carlo was also the tenth inauguration on 1997 December conducted by Riccardo Chailly, while it was the first for bass Michele Pertusi, who has been singing at La Scala since 7 but had never taken the stage on <> December.
