For around seven million motorists, car insurance will become more expensive from 2024. For about 70 percent, nothing changes. Some models benefit.

Munich – Attention motorists! From next year, third-party liability insurance will be more expensive for some models. So if you are planning to buy a new or used car in 2024, you should first make a type class query with the German Insurance Association (GDV). Not only is it free of charge, but it can also be used to quickly find out how expensive the liability insurance as well as the partial and comprehensive insurance for the new model could be.

But car owners are now also facing these higher costs. According to the GDV, around 7.4 million motorists will soon have higher classifications in motor vehicle liability insurance. For example, the two models Ford Focus 1.0 and the Audi Q5 50 TDI Quattro each deteriorate by three model classes. Most drivers, on the other hand, should be able to breathe a sigh of relief. For around 70 percent, or around 29.4 million drivers, the type classes will not change. And about 5.4 million can even benefit from better type classes. Why drivers should check their insurance now.

New model classes will be introduced from 2024 – Audi, Ford and Mercedes models will be more expensive

As a general rule, a lower type class is cheaper than a higher one: the liability classes range from 10 to 25, the fully comprehensive classes from 10 to 34 and the partially comprehensive classes from 10 to 33. According to the ADAC traffic club, the GDV's type class statistics include around 32,000 different vehicle models as well as their damage assessments from 2020 to 2022. The association determines the type class of the respective model on the basis of its damage balances. A car model with little damage and low repair costs is given a low type class. By far the most expensive car repair is currently in Munich, followed by Hamburg and Düsseldorf.

So far, so good to the system behind it. But how will this statistic affect the individual models in reality from 2024 onwards? To this end, the GDV has compiled a list of selected examples of type classes in motor insurance.

It will be more expensive for these models in the coming year:

Vehicle modelChange compared to previous year in stages
Audi Q5 50 TDI Quattrothree levels higher
Ford Focus 1.0three levels higher
Mercedes-Benz A 250 E STHone step up

The Honda Jazz 1.5 Hybrid is even rated four notches higher in the fully comprehensive class and one step higher in the partial casco class. For the Mercedes-Benz A 250 E STH, the Gesamtverband determined an increase of three levels in the fully comprehensive class and by one step in the partial casco class. Owners of the Nissan Leaf also have to reckon with higher classifications in the full and partial caso. It will also be more expensive for SUVs and luxury vehicles such as the Audi RS6 Avant (plus one level in all three classes) or the BMW X6 M50D.

New type classes for almost 13 million motorists

There are 16 type classes (10-25) in motor vehicle liability insurance. The classification of the model is based on the insurance benefits for injured third parties following traffic accidents. In comprehensive insurance, the statisticians of the GDV distinguish between 25 type classes (10-34). The calculation of the fully comprehensive insurance includes the damage to your own car after accidents caused by yourself as well as the partially comprehensive damage (including car theft, glass damage, wildlife accidents or damage caused by natural events) of fully insured vehicles. There are 24 type classes (10-33) in partial casco insurance. According to the GDV, these statistics take into account the partially comprehensive damage caused by vehicles with comprehensive insurance.

If the damage reports and repair costs have decreased compared to the previous year, the vehicle is classified in a lower type class and vice versa.

New type classes coming from 2024 - It will be cheaper for Suzuki and Dacia riders

Drivers of older models and small cars will be able to get off cheaper in the future. According to GDV, the Suzuki Ignis all-wheel drive (type MF, since 2016) improves by three classes and the Dacia Jogger (type DJF, since 2022) by two classes.

It will be cheaper for these models in the coming year:

Vehicle modelChange compared to previous year in stages
Suzuki Ignis 1.2 All-wheel drivethree levels lower
Dacia Jogger 1.0two levels lower
Polestar 2two levels lower
Kia Rio 1.0one level lower
Toyota Auris 1.4one level lower

Although the Tesla Model Y all-wheel drive jumps up one notch in the liability class, the model is three levels lower in the fully comprehensive class and two levels lower in the partially comprehensive class. The Dacia Jogger 1.0 will also be classified as more affordable in the future in fully comprehensive insurance. It jumps down three steps.

For some owners of small cars, car insurance will therefore become cheaper in the coming year. You can quickly find out whether it is worth changing insurance by entering personal data on the comparison portal Verivox.de. But drivers of a more upscale Mercedes (CLA 250 SHOOTING BRAKE), for example, are also likely to enjoy lower premiums.

According to Autobild.de, you can save 24 percent – i.e. 110 euros for liability insurance – and 19 percent – i.e. 256 euros for the fully comprehensive premium – due to cheaper type classes. In addition, these numerous changes will also affect motorists in 2024. Drivers are already being asked to pay when refuelling, although they have to pay more for fuel in the south than in the north.
