Should you put poinsettia on the windowsill in winter?

2023-12-10T11:29:19.694Z

Highlights: A place near the window is ideal for the poinsettia in the home because it needs enough light to carry out photosynthesis. If there are radiators underneath, this could be exactly the reason why the plant gets yellowed leaves in winter. Another sign that you are taking care of it incorrectly is when it curls up the leaves. The ideal temperature for the houseplant is between 15 and 22 degrees. If the leaves turn yellow or even fall off, the plant is too moist.

The poinsettia needs enough light, but does not tolerate heating air. That's why it's not so easy to find a suitable place for him.

A place near the window is ideal for the poinsettia in the home because it needs enough light to carry out photosynthesis. That's why most people just put it on the windowsill in their homes. However, if there are radiators underneath, this could be exactly the reason why the poinsettia gets yellowed leaves in winter. Another sign that you are taking care of it incorrectly is when the poinsettia curls up the leaves.

Should you put the poinsettia on the windowsill?

The poinsettia gets its slightly yellow leaves at too high temperatures, as the magazine Öko-Test reports. The ideal temperature for the houseplant is between 15 and 22 degrees. In other words, the location for the poinsettia should ideally be nice and bright and you can place it in the apartment "on a windowsill", so the conclusion, "but please not above the turned up heating". Also, it should not be placed in the blazing sun.

How often should you water poinsettia in winter?

If the soil is quite dry, you should water the poinsettia with lukewarm water, according to a report by Bayern 1 on care tips in winter. However, waterlogging should be avoided in any case, because the poinsettia suffers from it. "Therefore, it is better to water too little than too much, or try an immersion bath for the whole root ball – about every 8 to 10 days (depending on room temperature and humidity)," the BR report says. If the leaves turn yellow or even fall off, the plant is too moist.

Poinsettias do not tolerate draughts

By the way, draughts can also be another trigger for the curled leaves of the poinsettia. Because the houseplant can't tolerate that. So don't put them near open windows and doors.
