For many people, their pension is barely enough to live on in old age.

A Berlin hairdresser fears that the same will happen to her - and takes politicians to task.

A Berlin hairdresser reports that she is already barely making ends meet.

She fears that when she retires, her situation will get even worse.

Berlin – Everything has become more expensive.

We've been hearing this mantra for months.

But while for some this means simply foregoing one or two extras, for others the high prices pose a threat to their existence.

Both acutely and with regard to pension.

This is also the case with a Berlin hairdresser.

She currently earns 1,500 euros gross, as she reported in an article in the

Berliner Zeitung

.

Due to the sharp increase in the cost of living, she is already having problems providing for herself and her two children - and her future doesn't look much brighter.

“Right now I hardly know how I’m going to pay for everything.

But when I retire, I will be poor,” she draws a sobering conclusion.

“800 euro pension, if at all” – hairdresser calls on politicians to take action

A fate with which you are unfortunately not alone.

According to figures from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) collected in 2022, 18.3 percent of the group of people aged 65 and over are at risk of poverty.

Women in particular are often less well positioned as they get older.

According to Destatis, the at-risk-of-poverty rate for women aged 65 and over is 20.3 percent.

For men, however, it is 15.9 percent.

This also threatens her, says the hairdresser from Berlin.

When she retires, she will have “a maximum of 800 euros available, if at all.”

She currently pays 650 euros rent.

This would leave her with around 200 euros for all other expenses.

For insurance, doctor's visits and medication, food, clothing, etc. That's hardly enough to live on, let alone for a nice retirement.

That's why she's demanding that politicians finally do something.

“We always talk about progress here, about more people working.

But for those who do that, the bottom line is that hardly anything comes out of it.”

Annoyance about the threat of poverty in old age in retirement is also noticeable online

An attitude that many can understand.

There are numerous comments on a Facebook post by the Berliner Zeitung about the article that show a great resignation towards the topic of pensions.

For example, one user writes: “Everything has been known and done for a long time, nothing has changed in terms of pension policy.” Another comments: “That's how it will be for me too, that's why I'm living now before I can't do it later.”
