From July 2024, a new device will be mandatory in cars in Germany: the black box.
What data it records and what drivers should know about it.
Drivers beware: In Germany, from 2024, in addition to many other new rules, a new type of box must be installed in your vehicle, more precisely, an event data recorder (EDR), also known as a black box.
EDR is intended to help reconstruct the course of an accident.
SÜDWEST24 reports what the black box requirement in cars means for drivers and what is behind it.
Mandatory from July 2024 – black box or EDR in new cars
The black box requirement in cars is just one of many changes that will be relevant for drivers in 2024.
Many people are already familiar with EDR technology from aircraft.
The EDR is used here to read events shortly before and after accidents.
Now there should be something very similar in cars too.
From July 7th, the black box requirement applies to all newly registered vehicles.
In plain language this means: Drivers will only be affected by the change if they buy or lease a new car after this point in time.
Then you can assume that the black box is installed.
But many manufacturers are already installing the device in their vehicles.

Black box in new cars – what data is stored?
According to ADAC, the EDR is usually located in the airbag control unit.
All important information from the acceleration sensors is collected here.
This information is also responsible for triggering the EDR data recording.
Data from five seconds before and 300 milliseconds after the accident is then stored locally.
This includes information about speed, engine speed, steering angle and whether an airbag has been deployed.
The EDR cannot make video recordings.

EDR in new cars from 2024 – when does the black box record?
The data from the car is measured continuously, but is only saved locally when a certain trigger threshold has been exceeded.
This happens if a change in speed in the lateral or longitudinal direction of more than 8 kilometers per hour is detected within 150 milliseconds or if belt tensioners, airbags or an active hood are triggered.
Black box requirement in the car – what happens to my data?
Local storage means that the data stays in the car and is not uploaded online to a cloud or server.
They can only be read using certain tools.
As the ADAC reports, the data belongs solely to the vehicle owner, but in order to clarify a case, a court can commission an expert to read the EDR data.
The data from the black box is only intended to support the investigation of accidents.
They alone are not enough.
This is also because the EDR only stores data about your own vehicle, not data about other vehicles involved in an accident.
