Where is the best place to live in Europe?

The European Commission surveyed more than 70,000 people - with some astonishing results.

Milan, Madrid or rather Berlin – in which city are the residents the happiest?

The EU Commission examined this question in 2023 and named the ten most livable cities in Europe.

German cities also made it into the ranking - but probably not one that most people would expect.

Ranking: Top ten most livable cities in Europe

First place among the most livable cities in Europe goes to Zurich.

Switzerland's largest city is considered the country's economic center.

This is probably why a proud 97 percent of those surveyed were satisfied with the quality of life in their metropolis.

The Dutch city of Groningen took second place with 96 percent satisfied, followed by Copenhagen (Denmark) with 96 percent.

  • Zurich, Switzerland (97 percent)

  • Groningen, Netherlands (96 percent)

  • Copenhagen, Denmark (96 percent)

  • Leipzig, Germany (95 percent)

  • Gdansk, Poland (95 percent)

  • Stockholm, Sweden (95 percent)

  • Geneva, Switzerland (95 percent)

  • Rostock, Germany (94 percent)

  • Braga, Portugal (94 percent)

  • Cluj-Napoca, Romania (94 percent)

  • By the way, the place of residence should be chosen carefully, because it also influences the psyche.

Leipzig and Rostock – here the Germans are most satisfied with their city

Neither Berlin, Munich nor Hamburg are represented in the European ranking.

Instead, life should be particularly good in Leipzig and Rostock.

The two East German cities are the only German cities to make it into the top ten most livable cities in Europe in 2023.

With 95 percent satisfaction among those surveyed, Leipzig took fourth place.

Rostock, where 94 percent of those surveyed like to live, takes eighth place.

However, it is cheaper to live in other cities in Germany.

Cities with the lowest life satisfaction

The ranking also shows where in Europe residents are most dissatisfied.

Palermo in Italy ranks first with a dissatisfaction rate of 62 percent.

This is closely followed by Athens in Greece and Istanbul in Turkey, both with a rate of 65 percent.

Tirana in Albania and Naples (Italy) share fourth place with a dissatisfaction rate of 66 percent.

This means that the most unpleasant residents all live in southern European countries.

The EU Commission has been conducting this survey since 2007, most recently in 2019. At that time, Hamburg was the only German city in the top ten and took seventh place.
