The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas has issued a security warning and travel warning that the island nation is now unsafe for tourists amid 18 murders — "mostly" driven by gang violence — in January alone. Concerns for

tourist safety have reached a boiling point, with U.S. officials claiming Tourists should not even try to "physically resist" during a robbery. "Murders have occurred at all hours of the day, including in broad daylight on the streets," the embassy wrote in a statement, and also recommended using "extreme caution" on the east side of the capital city of the Bahamas, Nassau. In

addition, the embassy urges Americans to be especially vigilant at night and to "keep a low profile" at all times.

Increase in level of travel warning

The US State Department, which placed the Bahamas on Friday under a travel warning of "heightened caution", noted that the danger persists in tourist and non-tourist areas.

Islands Prime Minister Philip Brave Davies addressed the frightening violence last week, saying roadblocks and undercover police operations would be initiated to contain the crisis, according to the Nassau Guardian.

"These actions may make you late for your appointments, or delay the plans you have, but it is a small price to pay for the overall benefit of making our streets safer, so that our lives are less affected by murder and other violent crimes," he said.

There is also concern about the activity of unregulated vessels, which according to the State Department may not be properly regulated or maintained for the sake of safety, and improper judgment made in the past by the owners of the vessels.

"Operators of commercial vessels have the discretion to operate their vessels regardless of weather forecasts, which has caused injuries and deaths in the past."

Earlier this week, the State Department also raised neighboring Jamaica to level three out of four on its travel warning for the country - "reconsider travel to the destination", with the highest travel warning being "do not travel".

"Violent crimes, such as home invasions, armed robberies, sexual assaults and murders are common," the State Department warns.

"Sexual assaults occur frequently, including at all-inclusive resorts."
