55 years after her wedding, a woman from Canada wants to enjoy her wedding cake.

But can it still be eaten safely after half a century in the freezer?

Many people store the majority of their weekly shopping in the refrigerator to be on the safe side.

As a result, they expect their food to last longer.

But that's not the case, because some foods actually go bad faster because of the moisture in the refrigerator than simply in the kitchen cupboard.

Most people associate even greater longevity for numerous foods with storing them in the freezer.

But can this actually guarantee an endless shelf life for various products?

After 55 years in the freezer – Canadian woman still wants to eat wedding cake

If there are leftovers after a sumptuous meal, many people probably reach for the Tupperware container.

The food is now quickly stored in the freezer compartment and can be thawed and reheated accordingly at some point in the future.

Rochelle Marr also froze part of her wedding cake in 1968 to enjoy with her husband on their 50th wedding anniversary, reports Canadian broadcaster

But the cake was forgotten in the depths of the freezer.

While cleaning the freezer, Marr and her son noticed the 55-year-old piece of fruit cake again.

Because her husband died in mid-2023, the Canadian plans to eat the cake together with her children and their families.

She said she had no concerns about the quality of the wedding cake.

“I love fruitcake,” says Marr.

Can frozen food go bad?

Even after a long time in the freezer, many foods do not go bad in a health-endangering sense, but in a qualitative sense.

Various products can turn slightly brown after a while and lose their taste over time.
