The Hong Kong government announces its intention to pass a new national security law that will fill the gaps in existing regulations, providing another tool for the authorities to limit civil liberties.
"The risks to national security are very high and very real and may even be sudden. Furthermore, the current geopolitical situation is very complicated," Governor John Lee said in his weekly briefing, assuring that the measure "will take effect as soon as possible".
It will complement the law imposed by Beijing on the former colony in June 2020 after the mass pro-democracy protests of 2019.
