When many readers think of Mitch McDeere, images of the 1993 film adaptation of “The Firm” with Tom Cruise, which is based on the book by John Grisham, come to mind.
The then young, aspiring lawyer began his career at a Memphis law firm, Bendini, Lambert & Locke, which gradually turned out to be very corrupt.
The book became a bestseller and sold very well.
The following novels were also a sure bestseller list spot for the author.
Now, after 30 years, the sequel “The Abduction” is available.

“The Firm” showed the publishing world how great the appetite for legal thrillers was.
Authors as lawyers were special and had an expert eye.
They could quickly distinguish good from evil.
Many of Grisham's books center on a morally complicated protagonist.
The author said in a 1992 interview, "We lawyers come into contact with people who have messed up their lives, and their mistakes make for fascinating stories." His agent received more than 100 unsolicited manuscripts from lawyers that year, and the Grisham Effect was born.
John Grisham “The Abduction”: That’s what the book is about
15 years have passed since Mitch McDeere worked with the FBI to take down his former criminal company.
Today he works in the world's largest law firm in Manhattan.
But the shadows of the past catch up with him: a mentor from Rome asks him for a favor and before he knows it, Mitch finds himself in the middle of a deadly conflict.
He is tasked with ending a hostage situation by paying an enormous ransom, but the situation is extremely critical.
It doesn't take long before not only his own safety, but also that of his loved ones is at stake.

Thirty years later, will the book manage to pick up the loose ends and adapt it to the current zeitgeist?
Because, according to the
Washington Post
, the female characters in “The Company” are not only underrepresented, but also portrayed too shyly.
Not to mention clichéd formulations for people with different skin colors, the newspaper judges.
It's a reunion for fans of Mitch and Abby McDeere.
In the book, only fifteen years have passed and Abby is no longer a teacher but publishes cookbooks.
Whether and how Grisham manages to link the predecessor with the new book and whether “The Abduction” is as good as the original remains to be seen in this country until the end of February.
The book is available from February 28th.
