Vittorio Sgarbi was sentenced to a fine of 2000 euros for the accusation of defamation against the former mayor of Rome Virginia Raggi.
This was decided by the single judge of Rome who also ordered a provisional amount of 20 thousand euros in favor of Raggi.
The affair dates back to February 2018. During a television programme, the art critic had targeted the administration led by Raggi in relation to the hypothesis of demolishing a Villa Liberty in Piazza Caprera, in the Trieste neighbourhood, defining the management of the city as "the Palermo by Ciancimino".
In particular, during a broadcast Sgarbi argued that "the announced destruction of Art Nouveau villas in Rome, denounced by women and by Italia Nostra first, confirms the most disturbing of perspectives: today's Rome is like Ciancimino's Palermo and the mayor of Rome, distracted by defense of the city, is objectively complicit in this criminal action. M5sa Rome today is like the Christian Democrats in Palermo in the 70s."
The Rome prosecutor requested a 4-month prison sentence.
