Last year the private non-residential sector also grew, with +5%.

This was revealed by the report from the 2024 Economic Observatory of ANCE, the building constructors' association.

Public works recorded +18% last year, largely thanks to Pnrr and EU funds.

The positive trend, even if in decline, was driven by the Municipalities.

Spending on public investments went from 13.2 billion in 2022 to 18.6 billion in 2023 (+41%).

In 2023, construction sector employment grew.

According to data from the construction funds, there was an increase in the number of hours worked by +0.9% and in registered workers by +2.9%, in the first 9 months of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022.

Due to the inflation that has eroded the purchasing power of families and the increase in interest rates, according to the Bank of Italy last year mortgages collapsed by 28.3%.

Home sales also fell by 11.8% in the first 9 months of the year, according to the latest data from the Revenue Agency.

The ANCE report notes that in 2021-2022 construction contributed to around a third of Italian GDP growth (+12.3%).

50% if we also consider its entire supply chain.

In 3 years, construction has recovered 80% of the production lost during the crisis.

From 2008 to 2020, 92 billion had been lost, from 2021 to today, 75 billion have been recovered.
