Many driving license classes and then also special characters.

Getting your driver's license can be complicated.

What's with the asterisk?

Kassel – Not every two-wheeler can be driven with every driving license.

Many categories on the back make it difficult to keep track.

And then there are asterisks.

Do these mean that the holder of the driving license is allowed to drive the respective class or not?

Driving license for motorcycles: What does the asterisk on the driving license mean?

A Reddit

user felt the same way

.

He posted his father's driver's license.

For driving license class A, an asterisk is entered on this instead of a date.

And then the puzzles began.

So what does this asterisk stand for?

An overview of the back of the driver's license card.

All motorcycles are listed under driving license class A.

One user commented under the post: “Class A includes A1 and A2 as well as AM.

He can use it to drive anything a motorcycle is, without any speed, power or other restrictions.” And he’s right.

The granting of a driving license can be entered in a variety of ways

On the back of the driving license all driving license classes are listed in row nine (see picture).

To the right, in row ten, is the date the driving license was issued for the respective class.

But that doesn't have to be the only indication as to whether driving a certain class is permitted.

The date can also be entered by hand in field 14, i.e. to the left of all driving license classes.

For all valid classes, an asterisk is entered as the symbol in row ten.

Classes that are not granted, on the other hand, are canceled with a line, as the

Federal Motor Transport Authority

explains.

The asterisk can therefore be translated as “see left”.

Why is the asterisk even used?

This is because driving licenses are printed before it is clear whether the test has been passed or not.

As long as the space is filled with a star.

After successful verification, the date is then entered manually, just on the left in field 14. If the driver's license expires and a new one has to be printed, the date is entered instead of the asterisk because the corresponding class is available before printing.
