The electronic medical record and the digital transfer of information between hospitals can save lives with a simple click: it happened in Bari in recent days when the vascular surgery specialists of the Di Venere hospital, alerted to an emergency by their colleagues in the emergency room of Altamura, were able to verify the severity of the patient's condition through the digital transmission of the CT images while the patient was still in the ambulance for the transfer.

Furthermore, they were able to quickly study the case before his arrival, prepare the operating room and the appropriate prosthesis to successfully operate on a ruptured aneurysm of the abdominal aorta, a pathology with a very high mortality (between 70 and 90%).

One of the first concrete examples of the application of digital transmission of information in the Bari Local Health Authority: between one hospital and another, between departments almost 60 kilometers away.

"A clear example - comments President Michele Emiliano - of how investing in technology is good for the health of Apulian citizens and the regional health system. All this in the name of the active collaboration, on the one hand, of the Region, through the Health Department, in financing and monitoring innovative processes in healthcare and, on the other, of the professionals of the ASL Bari engaged in the creation of increasingly sophisticated operational procedures that protect people's health".

"The images of the CT scan performed in Altamura, which arrived in real time via the Ris-Pacs digital system - explains Dr. Pino Natalicchio, director of Vascular Surgery at Di Venere - allowed us to eliminate the patient's pre-operative waiting times, in view of the planning of the open or endovascular procedure and gain precious time to perform a very delicate operation".
