From February 1st, only the new vignettes for 2024 will be recognized.
Anyone caught with an old one during a check will face a fine.
Munich – No matter where the car journey abroad takes you – if you drive to neighboring European countries, you usually have to pay to use the roads.
With a few exceptions, the vignette requirement applies to the Austrian motorway and expressway network.
In November, Austria's federal government adjusted its toll rules and prices.
The new catalog of fines also punishes numerous offenses more harshly.
What many drivers shouldn't forget now: the vignette change is due on Wednesday (January 31st).
So if you still have the annual vignette from 2023 on your windshield, you should quickly replace it with the vignette from 2024 - otherwise it will be expensive.
There is even a risk of a hefty fine of 726 euros if a special rule is not followed.

Austria: Anyone caught with an invalid vignette will have to dig deep into their pockets
If a random vignette check does not reveal a valid vignette, those affected must pay a replacement toll of 120 euros on site.
This also applies to an automatic vignette check.
Single-track vehicles, on the other hand, have to expect 65 euros.
“70 percent of all annual vignettes are already digital because it offers many advantages,” the Austrian magazine
Kosmo.at
quotes ASFINAG managing director Claudia Eder.
However, drivers can still freely choose whether they prefer to click or peck.
As a result of the innovation, digital vignettes are now available for immediate use.
These can be purchased at ASFINAG vending machines, at selected sales points, at the six ASFINAG toll booths, gas stations and from the partners ÖAMTC, ARBÖ and ADAC.
Exception: when purchasing the digital 2-month and annual vignette online, these are still only valid from the 18th day due to consumer protection.

In addition to Austria and Switzerland, according to the ADAC, a vignette is also required in Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Hungary.
While in other countries such as Italy, France or Spain there is a route-related toll.
Stricter traffic regulations also apply in other European countries than in Germany.
