Over 1,000 customers voted: A supermarket is the clear favorite of Germans.

However, none of the supermarkets can really score points when it comes to prices.

Munich – Where do Germans prefer to go shopping?

The German Institute for Service Quality recently addressed this question.

For this purpose, reviews from over 1,159 customers were evaluated.

The result shows: Those surveyed have a clear favorite - closely followed by Edeka.

What all supermarkets have in common, regardless of customer satisfaction: The year is expected to bring with it some changes, including deposits and price tags.

Six supermarkets achieved a “good” quality rating in the rankings – Rewe wins

Because of the high quality of the food and the pleasant design of the branches, Rewe made it to first place.

The overall quality rating is “good” with 77.8 points, as the German Institute for Service Quality reports on its website.

And that's despite the fact that things don't always go smoothly at Rewe when it comes to food quality: the supermarket was recently affected by a nationwide sausage recall.

Edeka got 74.3 points in the survey, putting it in second place.

The quality rating is also “good”.

Six other supermarkets, including Tegut and Kaufland, received the same verdict.

However, consumers seem to be less satisfied with the companies Famila and K+K Klaas & Kock.

Both only achieved a quality rating of “satisfactory” in the survey – Famila with 69.8 points and K+K with 68.8 points.

The result therefore differs significantly from an assessment by the German Society for Consumer Studies (DtGV) from 2022. Here Kaufland landed in first place and Famila in third place. Rewe, on the other hand, had to settle for eleventh place, Edeka in eighth place.

Supermarkets can score points with consumers with fresh and regional products

But even when evaluating the current survey, the generally popular Rewe and Edeka stores only received a “satisfactory” rating in the price subcategory.

While consumers are satisfied with the high quality of food - especially the freshness and taste of the products - there is still room for improvement when it comes to price.

Given the recent rise in food prices, this is not surprising.

Edeka even slips to fifth place in the rating, while Kaufland climbs to first place.

For Rewe it is at least enough for second place.

Despite the negative price aspect, many consumers prefer to go to the supermarket instead of the discounter.

Almost 58 percent of consumers in the survey stated that they were willing to pay more for high-quality food.

They also see the large selection of regional products as a clear plus point.

However, according to the German Institute for Service Quality, easy accessibility also plays a significant role when choosing a supermarket or discounter.
