The average person spends 26 years in bed, and it's quite surprising to know that despite this time we make quite a few mistakes that prevent us from getting a good night's rest.

Whether you sleep on your back, side or stomach, everyone has their own particular way of feeling comfortable in bed, but sleep experts at Happy Beds say we're using our pillows wrong, reports the British Mirror.

If you use your pillow simply to rest your head on, experts advise people to try using an extra pillow between your legs - which can give you the best sleeping position and provide a whole host of health benefits.

Happy Beds' sleep experts claim that sleeping with a pillow between your legs can reduce back pain, prevent muscle cramps, improve blood circulation and more.

When you sleep, the muscles in your back begin to relax and heal over time, so it is very important to think about your posture when you sleep.

With 23% of the world's population suffering from chronic back pain, which can make it difficult to sleep, changing this one thing can go a long way.

Rex Isapp, sleep expert and CEO of Happy Beds, explains that "the moment we get into bed, we adopt a preferred sleeping position without giving it much thought;

We don't realize that what we perceive as comfortable actually does us more harm than good."

He added: "Misalignment during sleep is a big problem, which affects our body by putting pressure on the spine.

We use pillows every day to rest our heads on while sleeping, but we should use them more because they have several other benefits for our sleep.

"Placing a pillow between your legs or knees can promote better posture to give you a more restful night's sleep, supporting your muscles and aligning your body."

It also relieves pressure on the lower back and hips and relieves muscle tension, which can help those who often suffer from pain while trying to sleep.

Additionally, sleeping with a pillow behind your back gives you an "upright" sleeping position, which also aids digestion and keeps your spine aligned with your neck.

For those who struggle with snoring, you should also try the pillow method, as sleeping on your side can open up your airways.

If you've ever woken up with nagging pain, numb feet, cramps or tingling around your toes, chances are it could be due to poor blood circulation.

This can be caused by pressure on the vena cava (main vein that carries blood to the heart and back) and placing a pillow between the legs can help ease blood flow.
