In the current Öko-Test, 19 orange juices were tested.

While a cheap orange juice received the top rating, three products failed completely.

Munich – There’s nothing like freshly squeezed orange juice at breakfast.

With a few tricks, oranges can be juiced even better.

And leftover orange peel can also be used for other purposes.

But you don't always have oranges at home or the time to laboriously squeeze them.

Luckily, you can already get ready-made orange juice from the supermarket.

But orange juice is not always the same as orange juice, as a current Öko-Test report shows.

The consumer magazine recently conducted a study of 19 orange juices, not just taking price into account.

Only one juice was convincing in all aspects, while three others failed.

Öko-Test compares significantly more expensive orange juices

A lot has changed since Öko-Test's last orange juice test, especially in terms of price.

Two years ago, several discounters still offered orange juices that cost less than 90 cents per liter.

In the consumer magazine's current test, however, there is no longer any orange juice that costs less than 1.99 euros.

Due to crop failures and historically low inventories, orange juice has become significantly more expensive.

Öko-Test’s assessment criteria:

  • Smell/taste

  • ingredients

  • Supply chains/corporate due diligence obligations

  • Fair and safe working conditions

  • Ban on highly dangerous pesticides

  • Other defects (e.g. packaging)

But what about the taste of commercially available orange juices?

What is their quality, are there residues of pesticides or other chemicals in the juices?

And how responsibly do the manufacturers act?

Öko-Test sought answers to these questions in a study of 19 orange juices from supermarkets such as Aldi, Lidl and Co.

Less than half of all orange juices tested had good results

According to the manufacturers, all 19 products tested consist of 100 percent fruit juice.

These include seven organically certified orange juices and five with the Fairtrade seal.

Five of the juices are chilled.

The prices for the orange juices are between 1.99 euros and 4.39 euros.

According to Öko-Test, the information on vitamin C content in all 19 samples is correct and pesticides or other undesirable substances were hardly detected.

However, less than half of all juices tested achieved a good result (7).

Only one orange juice received a “very good” rating.

Most products (8) achieved results in the “satisfactory” to “sufficient” range.

Three orange juices failed the test: two received a grade of “poor,” and one product that even violated legal requirements was rated “unsatisfactory.”

Orange juice test: A high price is no guarantee of a good product

A closer look at the drinks tested shows that a good orange juice doesn't necessarily have to be expensive.

This is particularly true for the test winner, the Fairglobe Way To Go orange juice from Lidl, which was rated “very good”.

The juice made from concentrate made by Pfanner costs 1.99 euros and was particularly convincing in terms of the company's social responsibility.

All other orange juices from the Austrian manufacturer tested, including “Fair” from Aldi and “Paradiso” from Penny, also impressed with the same price and an overall “good” result.

The organic orange juices from Alnatura, Dm and Voelkel were also rated as “good”.

However, an organic label was by no means a guarantee of good results.

Two others achieved “satisfactory” results in the test and one achieved “adequate” results.

Test loser does not comply with legal requirements

The orange juice, which was rated “unsatisfactory” in the test, is also organic and comes from Norma.

The juice, which costs a whopping 2.69 euros, failed primarily in terms of its aroma.

According to the laboratory commissioned by Öko-Test, it does not meet the legal requirements for orange juice made from concentrate.

However, this does not have any harmful health effects for consumers.

It only refers to flavorings that apparently were no longer added after the juice was concentrated, which violates the Fruit Juice and Soft Drinks Regulations.

However, as the consumer portal reports, the supplier of the juice has withdrawn the affected batch from circulation.

Öko-Test also classified two more of the 19 orange juices as “poor”.

These are products from Kaufland and Valensina.

Juices from Innocent or Edeka's own brand, on the other hand, did not score more than “satisfactory”.
