If you want to protect your laundry, you shouldn't ignore the care label.

In addition, a few basic rules help, not least in saving energy.

It has happened to almost everyone: you accidentally washed something at too hot a temperature and then had to throw the item of clothing away.

It would have been better to stick to the information on the care label.

The Bavarian Consumer Service also has a few tips on what you should pay attention to when using the washing program and when filling the washing machine.

For delicate laundry there should be enough space in the drum.

Washing clothes: What temperature is the right one?

Good to know: “Boiled laundry at 90 °C is no longer necessary in normal households; temperatures up to a maximum of 60 °C are sufficient,” as the Bavarian Consumer Service reports on its website.

Lightly soiled outerwear such as T-shirts can be washed at temperatures of 30 °C.

However, stains should be pre-treated as they are harder to remove at low temperatures.

According to the Bavarian Consumer Service, you should also make sure that the detergent you choose is suitable for low-temperature laundry.

According to the experts, “hygienically demanding” and heavily soiled laundry such as tea towels and baby bibs should be washed at 60 °C with a powdered heavy-duty or universal detergent.

“The bleaching agents it contains not only remove stains, but also have a germicidal effect.”

Also think about saving electricity when washing

Choosing temperatures that are as low as possible helps save electricity.

With a view to energy costs, energy saving programs are also recommended.

And depending on what you are washing, you can load the washing drum more or less.

For insensitive materials such as cotton, the machine can be “loaded with light pressure,” according to a statement from the Bavarian Consumer Service.

For wool and delicate laundry, however, the drum should be filled “significantly less”.

Follow the instructions on the care label

In each individual case, you should also pay attention to the washing temperature and the care instructions given on the washing label.

This way you avoid damaging your favorite sweater or delicate silk blouse.
